""Will the support aad inflneaee of the Booscvelt administration be gircn heartily t the Republican party ia Oregon I The turning down of the bosses at Portland in the organisation of the sew state committee most cer tainly be pleasing to the President. IT IS ORATTTYDTQ TO THE CLEAN, DECEIT TiTirTMKNTS OF ALL PARTIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE AND ESPECIALLY TO THE 3EPUBLICAKS. Dr. Withyeorcbe is well liked all over the itate. His personality is all that ould be asked. If he proves a strong campaigner he will surely win. There is a marked tendency to dis regard party lines," cansed by the at titude of the President, and Chamber lain will BBdonbtedly commend Boose relt policies. Chamberlain will profit some by this but there are many Republicans who reseat this kind of a campaign aad -will not be influenced by it. THE PACT THAT WTTHYCOMBE IS NOT A BOSS-BIDDEN CANDI DATE WILL HAVE A TENDENCY TO WIN HIM A LABOE INDEPEND ENT VOTE. There are three other Democrats run Tjing for state office who are strong men, and have political aspirations. Gearin for Senator. Hailey for Justice, Galloway for Congross, a well as Chamberlain for governor, will bo ask ing for Republican votes. Now it is far easier to trade off w'eak Democrat on state, district aad county titVet all-over, the state for -one nan ft the tiiket in -1002 than it will be to trade votes for four Dem ocratic candidate in 1009. Unless the Chamberlain workers will play fair with Goaria, Galloway and Hailey there will be trouble in the camp of the Democracy. WHICH OP CHAMBEBLAIN'S THBEE RUN NINO MATES IS TO BE SACBI TTCED? So far a the i.-i- between the people and the groat truta aad corporations are eoaernd. llouroc ttandH dally with Ho4rlt and against extension of corporate in fluences1 over the V. S. senate. Under these circumstances, and ad mitting the facts and issues as stated, can Gearin defeat Bourne in Oregon on a square contest of principles in volved! THESE IS BUT ONE AN SWER POSSIBLE. The political battle will center tip on two men on the Republican ticket Witbycombe anl Bourne. WTTHYCOMBE REPRESENTS FREEDOM PROM BOSSDIM IN STATE ADMINISTRATION. BOURNE REPRESENTS AGGRESSIVE MILI TANT PEOPLE'S REPUBLICANISM IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE VERSUS CORPORATE CONTROL AND TRUST DICTATION. On these two issues alone the whole Republican ticket deserves to win aad will mean the redemption of the party from machine rale and its emancipa tion from plutocratic domination. A REFORM LEGISLATURE. Of coarse, there ought to be some re forms in the manner of conducting the Oregon legislature. Some will say that because The Jour nal editor tendered the people his ser vices and was left off the ticket HE SHOULD LEAVE REFORMS TO OTHERS. NOT SO. That does not follow. Reforms mas: be brought about and nd man's personal interests transcend good government. In the first place so reforms are possible at the. hands of the grafting element of any party. There was not a siagle reform eon- tended for by the editor of this pa per that Is not just as badly needed as though he were on the ticket, AND WILL NOW BE JUST AS ENERGET ICALLY CONTENDED FOR BY HIM OUTSIDE OF THE LEGISLATURE. It makes little difference by whom reforms are brought about or put into operation, so long as the people get results. The votes east for the editor of The Journal were east, not for him person ally, but for reform principles which he advocated. INDIVIDUALS ARE BUT CHAN NELS FOR THE EXPRESSION OF PRINCIPLE. Good government de pend on ao one man's success or fail ure. Tea years ago the state tax levy was down to three mills. Last year it was over six mills. It should be put back to the former figure and there would be a better state govern mnt. , A PROGRAM SHOULD BE FORM ULATED TO WIPE OUT ALL DI RECT STATE TAXES an 1 make everv department of the state government elf-ustaining and revenue-prokicing THAT WOULD BE SIMPLY BUSI NESS.
