E. Barling of Boul din island, San Joaquin county, thcro is a dcplornblo loss of gamo fish, which were swept into Bouldin island at tho timd of the breaking of tho lovco on March 21st last. Thousands of fish aro now dying there, nnd no effort is being inado to savo them, nor can such bo at this lata day. After tho closing of tho break, so mo 100 or moro tons of fish, Barling states, were Impounded over nn area of lnnd comprliiing 0000 acres, tho water on this averaging in depth from ono to IS feci. As long as this water kept nt a temperature not in excess of 00 do- grccs the fish thrived nnd spawned. Fishermen set their nets, and caught I rmn en bo quantities of striped bass, carp, catfish nnd other variation, but tho beginning of tho ond enmo whon it was decided that such valuable land as Bouldin island wns not adding to tho bounty of its owners under a shoot of water fostering thousands upon thou sands of fish. It wns decidod to drain off tho water, estimated nt soma ten billions of gal lons, nnd n pumping plant was installed with n capacity of 2,000,000 gallons per minute. As tho wator becamo lowor, tho thousands of fish lookod liko ono hugo moving ninss. Tho area is now about 20 acres in all, and in this tho tons of fish nro dying off fast. "It seems a pity," says Mr. Bailing, "ft an A m tnnti nt CnWtnmXn n rvnmA fish, especially tho striped bass, which seem to bo in tho greatest numbers, gasping out thoir lives in a fetid pool whero a spoon nnd a reel would bo a moro fitting ond." The Catchy Shirtwaist. Tho shirtwaist suit, in all its variety, is probably the most popular form of summer garmont. Nor is it surprising that this is so, considering that all summer materials can bo successfully used for it, it is oasily mado a homo or can bo bought ready made nt almost any prico ono is willing to pay, is su premely eomfortnblo and is univer sally becoming. With a fow shirtwaist suits tho busy woman is ready for nil occasions that nro apt to present themselves. With plain ones for morning wear nnd trim med ones for afternoon or evening, alio is pretty euro to be alwnys tastefully dressed. A woman who goes much in society, of courso, noeds different dresses for different occasions, but she is not in tho majority. Latest sketches show threo different styles of these drosses. Tho first Is n very plain but vory smart suit of pale blue linen,. with white turnover collar. On the shoulders are ahapod pieces of tho linon, stitched around tho edgo, with nn embroidered button at tho curved side. Pioccs of tho samo sort aro on tho sloevcs, forming the cuff, Down tho front of both waist and skirt is a stitched band of tho blue linen, with tho embroidered buttons sewed the entiro length. Tho skirt is otherwise plain, nnd cut "with a full sweep about tho feet. Tho socond suit is moro elaborato. It is of whito and blue spotted dimity, made with a group of tucks at either side of the front and open in the center nt tho lower half to discloso a V- shaped pioeo of lace, around the edgo of which aro llttlo blue buttons. Tho same ararngement is on the lower part of the puff of tho sleeves, which end in a cuff of the lace headed by a band of blue muslin. The collar and tie are also of the blue muslin. The skirt is laid in pleats turning toward but not quite meeting in the front. The third is in green and white ra vers of embroidered mull, and a cheml sette of tucks and embroidery. The sleeves aro rather full puffs, with a tight cuff at the elbow from which fall three ruffles, tho top one of mo hair and the under two of mull. No trimming is required on the pleated skiri. The girdlo is of the samo material, fastened witt threo small green buttons. In Mad Chase. Millions rush in mad chase after health, from one extreme of faddism to another, wh&n.
