The question for debate is: "Ro solved, Thnt tho Policy of Restricting Further Immigration to the United States is Practicable." The Salem team supports tho negative. The debating team from Salem is composed of Edwin Hnslnin, Rex Tur ner and Helen Philips; Ralph Moores as alternate. Tho Eugene tenm is composed of Raymond Kerr, leader; Ross Chamber lain and Earl Leach. v Thero is much interest being dis played n both schools over this de bate. Tho locnl team have been putting all their spare hours into hard study, and the teachers flunk they will give tho Eugene team a hard strugglo for supremacy. Prof. Traver will go up with the team, also Prof. Powers, Miss Hazard nnd Miss Shcpard. About 25 of tho high school students will go along to attend tho debate, and visit the university. Tho funeral of Warner Talkington, who died at Looking Glass Tuesday, will bo held from W. B. Hnmniitte's undertaking parlors in Roseburg Thursday, April 13th, at 2 o'clock p. m. Finzer ha recently received from the "Pnlted States war department copies of the general orders governing the national rifle contest, which is to be held at Sea Girt, N. J., on August 24, 1905. The national rifle range is located at Sea Girt, and every year teams from the different detachments of tho United Statos troops nssemblo thero and com pete for trophies. Each team is com posed of 12 men nnd the contest Is open to tho follewing: U. S. army, two teams, one cavalry nud one infantry. U. S. navy, ono team. U. S. marine corps, one team. U. S. military acade my, ouo team. U. S. naval academy, one team, and ouo team from tho na tional guard of each stato nnd tcrritor ity. including the District of Columbia. The men representing the teams go at tho expense of the United States government, and must wear tho author ized uniform of tho corps to which they belong. Tho prizes offered nre as follews: To tho team making the highest aggregnto total in the three days' contest, tho nn tional trophy, authorized by act of congress, to bo competed for annually, nnd $300 in cash. To theVoam making the second high est aggregato total, the Hilton trophy and $200 in'ensh. To the tenm making the third highest nggregnte score, tho bronze "Soldier of Marathon" and $150 cash. To tho team making the fourth high est score, $100 in cash; to the tenm making the fifth highest score, $75 in cash, and to the team nmkiug the sixth highest score, $50 in cash, and also a medal for each member of the winning teams. Although it W the privilege of each state to send a tenm of 12 men from tho nutionnl guard, it is not compul sory, nnd so fnr it has not been decided whether Oregon will bo represented "in the shoot. It is safe to say, however, that should a team from this stato bo sent to Sea Girt, they will bo well at tho head of the list, notwithstanding tho fact thnt the members of thu competing teams at the national contest aro among tho best rifle shots in the world. At tho stnto moot held in Portland Inst August thoro wero some oxeellcnt scores mado, and, with a few months' practice, thero is no reason why tlioso scoros could not bo greatly improved. It would not ho a dillicult task to pick n competent tenm from this stntc, as the records show that thero some whore near 100 men in the O. N. O. who can average 100 or moro out of a pos siblo 150. A team from Company M, of this city, won the stato trophy last fall at Portland, making n total score of 457 points out of a possible 500 points, and should a team from this state be sent to Sea Girt next August, Salem will no doubt furnish threo or four men to make up tho tenm. The eligiblo enndidatos from Com jinny M, aro Sorgoant Roscoe Hlielton and Sergeant Ralph White and Private Stanley Rider. Those young men are unquestionably among tho host all round mnrksmon to be found, seldom making loss thnu 45 out of a jiossible 50, at any range from 100 to 100 arils. Cajitain Murphy has just completed a now rifle rango in Polk county, which is considered to bo the best in the state, as is covors a dlstaneo of 1000 yards.
