Historical Event In the Con duct of This Historic Institution The pupils of Sacred Heart Acade my, in this city, wore given a holiday on Friday. II Is an important day In tho history of the, order of Sisters of tho Holy Names of Jesus and Mar'y, who own nnd control tho school. For ty-five years ago today October 21, 1859 tho first, delegation of those pious sisters 12 In number arrived In Oregon from Montreal, having made tho voyago by tho way of the Isthmus of Panama, w'lth many trials nnd dangors. It was through tho request of Arch bishop F. N. Blanchet, tho pioneer prolato of tho great Pacific North woat, that tho bravo little company of teaching sisters was procured, and he accompanied them on their voyage to the "Far West," In tho samo o sel with them General Winflold Scott, then an Idolized hero, was also a pas senger, and in their annuls of tho Journey tho sisters record with great gratltudo hla romarkablo kindness and consideration to them. An account of the landing at Portland, written a few years ago, closes with this paragraph: "An oxpoctnnt throng of spectators lined ono of Portland's wharfs! on tho morning of October 21, 1859. The arrival of General Scott and his staff was an auspicious event tha' called forth hundreds, In whoso hearts tho great Amerclnn gonoral hold his place as an Ideal hero; 'tho return of Ore gon's apostolic prelafo to his flock was joyously welcomed by tho few dovoted priests and tho pioneer Cath ollcs of Portland, whose gratltudo was bound'ess on beholding his of forts to procure an educational sis torhood rowardod" Tho 12 sls'ers compoilng tho devot ed and unsotflsh band wore Sisters Mary Alphonso, Mary of Mercy, Mary Margaret, Mario do la Visitation, Francis Xavlor, Mary du Calvalro, Febronla, Florence Porpetua, Arson lu's, Julia and Agntha, and a romark ablo tribute to tho climate of Oregon. lo-that after, 45 yeari of unceasing and laborious toll, six of thoso, or 60 per cent, are still allvo and In active sor vlo, vl: Sisters M. Margaret, Fran els Xnvior, Porpetua Agathn and Fe bronla, the last named being ono ol thoso In hargo of Sarod Heart Aad omy In this Ity, tho othors being at St. Mary'a collogo and academy in Portland. Their coming to Portland found veil, cheerloss surrolundlngs. Where now stands tho magnificent brick structuro between Fourth, Fifth, Market and Mill streets, thero was a small wcodon building with nono of the comforts of life. Their first nights wero spout with their satchels for pll lows and tho aval'ablo contents of satchels for bed- coveilng. The Incnn ronlencos, and, ono might say, hard ships, of tho early dayB for thorn wore many, but thoy wero consecrated to a cause, and they boro all with pa tience. Four years' lalor In 1863 a fow of those sisters camo to Salem and start od their 'first school In tho old Ma sonic hall at the corner of Chemeketa and church streets, whoro Dr. Rich ardson's residence now stands, later securing tho property which thoy now occupy, and whore thoy havo built up an education Institution that Is a sourco of prldo to this city. At tho Portland collogo and acade my thoro is also a holiday today and a colebratlon of tho anniversary, In which SUtor Febronla has joined her five remaining fellow-pioneeM In lok Ing back ovor this long lifetime and renearsing tho scenes and oxporloncos incident theroto.
