STATE Talk of Its Advantages and Not of the Little Un pleasant Things A correspondent signing himself "Newcomer," In the Cottago Grove Leader has tho following very pointed and truthful article in tho last Issuo of that excellent paper: "May I take a llttlo space In your paper to tell a few of my impressions of this great stato of Oregon. First of all what Impressed mo most, was the lavish way In which naturo had dealt her bounties; forests, mines, water, quarries and good soil for agri culture. Cominc from California where Irrigation prevails, tho fields and gardens watered only by rains seemed strange. Orecon streams. their banks covered with vines and flowers havo been an unending source of pleasure, for many rivers In Cali fornia are "dry creeks," as their banks too plainly show. Traveling from Los Angeles to Portland ono passes through great changes In the scenery. Immediately upon leaving tho southern cities, we pass Into arid land, save where irrigation has reclaimed tho desert, and all through tho length of the stato gardens and orchards are made to grow by tho liberal uso of water. Leaving California and pass ing Into the Umpqua valley, farms and orchards look green and promis ing and there is a dearth of the ubiqu- Ituous windmill. On through tho Wil lamette valley to Portland, all Is green, and tho rivers and woods aro more attractive than dry plains and brown hills. Nearly every town has a river that will supply water power, and Is surrounded by forests that supply lumber and fuel. Now to my point, for all Oregonlans know of their ad vantages. Let us tell of them, talk of them constantly to outsiders, do you know what has made California tho strong stato she is? It is x her everlasting boasting, at all times and In all places. You never hear a Callfornlan find fault with his state to a stranger, and California yarns aro famous through out tho United States and tho world. But these very stories attract peoplo and awaken a deslro to llvo in that wonderful country or at least to visit there. Now what greets a stranger, who on coming to Oregon, admires tho country? Generally this, "Oh but wait till winter and you will bo glad to get out" or "Well if you havo to livo here why mako the best of It." Do you realize that most people know nothing of Oregon save that is rains a great deal hero? Why not, instead of saying that it rains, all the time, say, "It rains enough hero to mako tho coun try productive, our wet wlntors mako fertile summers, and keep our streams llowlng." Would that not sound more attractive to strangors? Tho sugges tion of verdure and pleasant summers would counteract tho possibility of mud, nnd dark days. Tell of your mlneH, your forests, your fortllo val leys, make peoplo feel a dosire to boo what you talk of and onco they como mako them feel that you aro glad thoy are hero, not that you hope tho first shower will drive them away. Do not talk of hard times. If thoy aro so to you, don't think It Is so with all, It does not help you any, and may discourage the newcomer who other wise might help to mako your fortuno hotter. Speak a good word for your own town and stato. With tho wealth of Golconda burled under "knocks" no stato could prospor. Better havo a nnme for boasting than for knocking. Remomber boasting has boasted many places to tho front that had not one quarter the natural resources that Orogon has."
