Tho Willam ette Presbj;tery of tho Presbyterian church met in this city last evening, and organized for business. Laat night tho opening meeting was held at tho church, whero Rev. Robert Ennls, of Turner, tho retiring moderator, preached tho sermon, in accordance with custom. Tho Presbytery then organized by electing Rev. J. E. Sny der, of Brownsville, moderator for tho ensuing term, with Rev. W. T. Wardolle, of Dallas, as clerk, and Rev. II. A. Garrlck, of Corvallls, as re porter. Rov. E. J. Thompson, of Cor vallls, Is tho stated clerk of the Pres bytery. After tho perfection of the organization tho Prcsbytory ad journed and repaired to Tremont hall, whero a recoptlon was tendered tho visitors, Including the Presbytery, the Prcsbyterlnl society and the members of tho Presbyterian church of this- city, by President and Mm. Lee. a very pleasant hour was spent, and before tho close of tho evening refreshments were served. Today, beginning at 9 a. m. an all day meeting of tho Woman's Mission ary Society will be held at tho Fir.t Presbyterian church, to which all tho church and the city generally are ln vited. April 13. Tho last sad ritoB ovor tho remains of Commander Hlroso, who was killed March 27th iu the second attempt to bottlo up Port Arthur, was held hort today. Throngs of people uncovered , cortego passed. The coffin was borne on a gun carriage, with a full military and natal guard. Tha medals of tho dead man carried on a silken pillow. I DIED. SIMMONS. At his home, on South Commercial street, Wednesday, April 13, 1904, Mr. L. O. Simmons, aged 56 years. Deceased was born September 22, 1848, In Charlwood, Surry county, England, and came to Oregon in 18C8, and settled in Linn county, where ho remained a year, and then came to Salem, where ho lived until 1872, when ho' returned to England, and was married to Miss Tamar Feld wick, on November 9, 1872. They came back to Oregon In October, 1873, and settled at Salem, whero they mado them a home, and have lived ever since. Mr. Simmons was well-known In Sa lem, whero he has a host of warm friends who mourn his death. Ho wa3 a kind and generous man, and was always seeking to help wherever ho could. He waB a devoted member of the Pentecostal Mission. Deceased leave3, besides the widow, three brothers, William Simmons, of Shedds, Ore ; Alfred Simmons and Archie Simmons, residence unknown, and Edwin Simmons, of Eugene, his sister, Mrs. M. A. Dancy, having died two years ago. Tho funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock (unless oth erwise changed) 'at the Lesllo M. E. Church. Rev. M. L. Ryan will con duct the funeral services, and inter ment will bo had In City View cemetery.
