Vhen tke wnltreea came The Oregon Dally Journal prints tho following In reference to a well-known Portland man's escapade: A sensational rejort Is going the rounds that Victor A. Schilling, city ticket agent of the O. It. & N. Com pany, who mysteriously disappeared eome time ugo, met a former wife In Snoknne. and wns Induced, undor threats of exposure, to leavo his Port land bride and rosumo his obligations to his first marriage. It will bo re membered that Schilling was the trusted employe of tho . It. & N. Com pany for a niimbor of yenrs, and whon the Union I'nclflc and Oregon Short Line nnd the Sotithorn Pacific wore merged, and the sovcrnl offices of tho company In the city wero combined with thoso of tho O. n. & N Company, such wns the tonfldonco reposed In Mr. Schilling tlint ho wns given charge of all. Several months ago, after a short engagement, he wns married to Mies Lena Shelby, daughter of ICu gne Shelby, who Is with Wells, Targo & Co., and after a fow weeks of what apparently was fi happy marrlago he suddenly disappeared from Portland. He was then soon In n hotel In Spo kane, and from there nil trncos of him wns lost. His wife declared thoro were No Domestic Infelicities and could assign no cnuse to his sud den disappearance. It wan feared for awhile that he had met with foul play, all kinds of rumors wero reported, but nothing definite could bo learned. It Is now alleged, however, that whon In Spokane several years ago ho mot and fell In love with n young woman thoro whom he finally Married In a Quiet Way, hut In time tired of her, and left lior without the formality of n divorce. Af ter returning to Portland ho hoard nothing of his wife for several years, ami naturally supposed that tho af fair had quieted down, nnd ho would hear nothing more of It. In his mar riage with her It Is not known, but It Is supposed, that ho used n fictitious name, nnd that she lost trace of him for the time. Now tho report states that when In Spokane this tlino ho nguln met his former wlfo, who recog nised him, and demanded nu oxplan ntlon, and when ho told her that he waa happily married again, having considered It nil settled between them, she said she had first claim, and would expose him unless h,e west with her. Thexreport supposes that he could not stand the public criticism that would follow au expoeure of tkla kind, and hastily Decided to Disappear until such time as he could settle matters and then return to his young wife In Portland. It Is claimed that, after leaving SHkane, he went to Mex ico, where he la now In the employ of a railroad company, and Is living with his former wife. When Mr. Suttle, of the O. It. & N. paaseuger deimrtmont. was seen this morning he stated that he had no knowledge of Schilling whatever since hla disappearance. A number of oth er railroad men nlso said that they positively had no definite information of him since leaving. Mr. Shelby, fath er of Mrs. Schilling, said: 'The peo ple hare a wrong Impression when they think Lena know where her hus band is. She, too, is Ih constant com munication with his people, nnd to my knowledge they are as deeply mysti fied as any one. We can assign Ne Reason far His Actions and my daughter Is oonNdent that he will return to her some time. If there kad been any domestic unhappl neee she could certainly not dlsgulae ker feelings so completely, and It Is my candid opinion tkot he did not tire of her, as waa reported. Of course. It Is puaalbw tkat ke could hare com mitted some error earlier In hla life, and have been called to aacount for It. but we nave nothing to make ns think tkat true, and will be greatly surprised If it turn out tkat way." o Oregon Blue Ribbon in STATE FAR BIB An evil eonlus sOoma to Bottle on ' " whatever was associated with Tracy.'"
