A sensational rejort Is going the
rounds that Victor A. Schilling, city
ticket agent of the O. It. & N. Com
pany, who mysteriously disappeared
eome time ugo, met a former wife In
Snoknne. and wns Induced, undor
threats of exposure, to leavo his Port
land bride and rosumo his obligations
to his first marriage. It will bo re
membered that Schilling was the
trusted employe of tho . It. & N. Com
pany for a niimbor of yenrs, and whon
the Union I'nclflc and Oregon Short
Line nnd the Sotithorn Pacific wore
merged, and the sovcrnl offices of tho
company In the city wero combined
with thoso of tho O. n. & N Company,
such wns the tonfldonco reposed In
Mr. Schilling tlint ho wns given charge
of all. Several months ago, after a
short engagement, he wns married to
Mies Lena Shelby, daughter of ICu
gne Shelby, who Is with Wells, Targo
& Co., and after a fow weeks of what
apparently was fi happy marrlago he
suddenly disappeared from Portland.
He was then soon In n hotel In Spo
kane, and from there nil trncos of him
wns lost. His wife declared thoro

awhile that he had met with foul play,
all kinds of rumors wero reported, but

hut In time tired of her, and left lior
without the formality of n divorce. Af
ter returning to Portland ho hoard
nothing of his wife for several years,

hear nothing more of It. In his mar
riage with her It Is not known, but It
Is supposed, that ho used n fictitious
name, nnd that she lost trace of him
for the time. Now tho report states
that when In Spokane this tlino ho
nguln met his former wlfo, who recog
nised him, and demanded nu oxplan
ntlon, and when ho told her that he
waa happily married again, having
considered It nil settled between them,
she said she had first claim, and would
expose him unless h,e west with her.
Thexreport supposes that he could
not stand the public criticism that
would follow au expoeure of tkla kind,

until such time as he could settle
matters and then return to his young
wife In Portland. It Is claimed that,
after leaving SHkane, he went to Mex
ico, where he la now In the employ of
a railroad company, and Is living with
his former wife.
When Mr. Suttle, of the O. It. & N.
paaseuger deimrtmont. was seen this
morning he stated that he had no
knowledge of Schilling whatever since
hla disappearance. A number of oth
er railroad men nlso said that they
positively had no definite information
of him since leaving. Mr. Shelby, fath
er of Mrs. Schilling, said: 'The peo
ple hare a wrong Impression when
they think Lena know where her hus
band is. She, too, is Ih constant com
munication with his people, nnd to my
knowledge they are as deeply mysti
fied as any one. We can assign
