II. J. Ottonholmor, local representa tive for Mllcnthat Bros., In discussing tho prlco of picking this morning, said that ho was of tho opinion that 10 cants would bo tho ruling prlco paid for harvesting this yoar'n crop. It wilt bo remembered Uiat about five years ago tho prlco of hops was, vory low, and growora paid only 25 cents n box for picking, but that flguro was unsatisfactory, and It wait docldod by tho growers to compromlso on tho prlco of 40 cents to bo paid, no mattor what hops brought In tho market. Judging from tho largo consump tion of the fruit, everybody In Salem must bo eating watormolons. In fact there aro throe firms In this city who are doing a wholosalo business In melons. During the past few days two carloads of watermelons have been unloaded nt Salem, another car arrives this ovonlng, and tho fourth car comes noxt Monday, When It is con sidered that oach car contains 14 tons of the fruit, or about 1400 melons, a hotter Idea can bo gathered of the amount of melons that aro disposed of hero. MANY MAKE JNQUIRY Who Was the Boy Kiiled At Woodburn Coroner Clough has received nu merous Inquiries concerning the young man who lost his life bonoath the ov erland train at Woodburn last Satur day. Tho, young man's Idontlty was not established at the time of the acci dent, when It was supposed that ho was some translont, without friends in those parts, and that theory Is still held by Coroner Clough. However, a Mrs. Tate and son, of Sublimity, called on Coroner Clough this morn ing to get further details concerning tho young man and his Idontlty. Tho woman thought the body might have been that of her son. She received a letter from the boy that was written nt Wheatland, August 2d, and mailed at Drooks on tho same day, tho day upon which tho accident took place. Slnco then she has heard nothing from him. When informed thnt tho train, upon which tho young stronger lost his llfo, reaches Woodburn at 0:30 o'clock in tho morning, and thnt It makes nd stops at Brooks, tho wo man was reasonably satisfied that tho body could not be thnt of her son, but to further satisfy herself she will send Coroner Clough photos of hor boy for Identification purposes. Coroner Clough also received a let ter of Inquiry this morning from Al bert F. Jalrl, of tho 26th battery, U. S. A of Vancouver barracks, Wash. Jalrl writes that his brother is en rauto from tho East to tho coast for n visit with himself and other relatives, who resldo In Salem. From tho fact that tho brothor had not yet appeared, tho writer feared that it may havo boon his rolatlvo that met with tho accident.
