Of course Ad. Dlllcy said he was simply off for a short vacation, but nobody believed tho statoment, and neither did he. Hut anyway they went, and the purpose of their leaving can only be conjectured. STRANGER BADLY SCARED Narrowly Escaped Drowning In Willamette Monday Hut for the prompt nctton of the op erntors of the Willnmotto rlvor ferry Monday afternoon, a young man nged 18 years, nnd a stranger In this city, would surely have been drowned. The joung man was In the river bathing, and attempted to swim across the stream, when ho was seized with cramps, and callod for holp. Tho mon who were operating the ferry saw In an Instant the young man's plight, nnd Jesse Pettyjohn hastily dotachod the rowboat from the sldo of the ferry and rowed to tho roscue of tho holplosB swimmer. The lnd was roachod none too soon, for ho wns In tho net of sink ing whan dragged Into tho hont. Noth ing was learned of the, adventurous young man, other'thnn thnt he wns a stranger In those parts, nnd that he went swimming to escape from the hot sun. At the point whore tho lad had attempted to swim the stream the river Is probably three-quarters of a mile wide, and to nccompllsh tho font Is n task not to be undertaken by an nmuteur. C. Mlnton, nnd laid In ashes about 30 cords of fine cord wood. So far as could bo learned thore was no Insurance on nny of tho property that was destroyed. The fire Is still raging nn thlB report closes, but Ih practically under control, since It will noceflsarlly have to confine Itself to the burning buildings, as thero are nono others In the lino of tho severe wind that was blowing during the flro. Tho origin of the blaze, that would havo been even more destructive, hod tho wind boon blowing from almost any othor direction, was from a wood saw engine. The engine's smokestack did not have the protection of a screen over the opening, and a spark escaped and Voa carried directly to tho barn, which was filled with hay, and In nn Instant tho structure was a mass of flames. The neighbors responded promptly, nnd, by groat effort, saved tho homo of Mr. Mlnton from the i flames, although the barn nnd soveral tons of hay wero destroyed. Tho flnraes rapidly spread to tho homo of Mr. Hoff, on tho east, and, despite the labors of n volunteer flro brlgado of more than a score of men, the home that was rccontly purchased by Mr. Hoff at a cost of $1200. was a heap of ruins.
