Object to the Party Managers Seendln. all their Money on the Patent Inside Syndicate. Portland Telegram: Whoro is tho National campaign fund of tlio Republican party going? , This question is apparently worrying more than ono country nowspoper proprietor, Some interestinc facta havo been un- earthed iby porsons attempting to solvo the problem. Oregon country editors aro registering complaints in a vigorous maimer, tho koynoto of tho trouble being in this eontence: "If the National Committee has any money to spend ouOiegon nowspopors, let it bo dono with tho newspapers direct." Although tho discontent has been browing for several weeks, the fact has been kept as carefully concealed as possible. It ia known that considerable correspondence Iicih passed between tho editors, tho National Commit too and tho Btato Committee, but theso epistles being Btriclly confidential, thoir exact wording has not been mado public. Tho Oregon Republican Kditorial Association is at tho bottom of tho demand for "backsheesh." An erronious impression appears to prevail that metropolitan nowspapors aro being subsidised, or rathor aro receiving filthy lucre for publishing political news, while tho country editors aro supplied with ready made campaign matter not accompanied by tho root of all uvil. Such supposed discrimination is not bolioved in by all mombers of tho association, however, and it has been vigorously condemned. ThodcBlroof tho editors to receive cash instead of plato mutter has ofton boon voiced. Tho subject was threshed over months ngo at a meeting of the organiza tion. At that time resolutions wore adopted anathematizing tho old system of plates and printed supplements "and demanding that tho money utilized In preparing Hitch things bo given to tho long-suffering editors in very hard cash. Tho proKsitlon received further debate August 27, when a meeting was held in thla city. As a result of this conference tho following circular has been mailed to members of tho association. "OREGON REPUBLICAN EDITOR IAL ASSOCIATION. "Hillsboro, August 28, 1000. WW w tho American Typo Foundora Company at Portland addressed a circular letter to tho Republican nowapaporaof Oregon of fering, freo of cost, bi-weekly, n political supplement for distribution among tho subscribers of said papers with their re gular issues. "At first glanco it would appear that this is a good campaign move iu tho direction of oducation of tho votors. But upon consideration of tho proposition it does not strlko tho Executive Commit tee of tho Republican Editorial Associ ation as the proper method of. proceed. Ing. "In tho first place tho suppllmonts are not freo. Tho papers accepting must pay express charges from Portland, hi bor for folding and additional postage. Again, wo soriously doubt tho utility of tlio supplements as a campaign meas ure. Wo dosiro'tho success of the Re publican party, and wo labor to that end in season and out; yoar in and year out; when tho campaign is warm und when tho people aro taking but a pass ivo interest in affairs olitical, and deem tho Republican editors of the Stato aro just as well qualified to judge as to methods as any committee can possibly be. Wo have discussed tho Is. sues in all their phasea, and ox pec t to do so horeafter, and to issue tho pro posed political supplement would amount to a confession of weaknesa or inability to do our part. Tho supple ments would give tho enemy an op portunity to cry "syndicato" and "sack," and their effect would bo detrimental rather than beneficial; besides, too often they do not fit tlio territory in which they are circulated. "If tho National Committee has an money to speiid on Oregon newspert let it deal with tho papers direct or through thla association, and if not, well and good, but wo do not twllevo the Republican editora of tho State, whoto incomes are noue too largo, desire to be taxed in order to bo a medium for in creasing the revenues of tlio American Type Founders ConiHiny, or any othei concern. "We suggest that tho Republican pub - - Ushers of the Stato will increase their Belf-reapect and command more defer ence from others by refuting to handln the ready-made Supplements. "J. B. In order to prevent the money from being invested in supplements, it is (aid, a letter was written to the state central committee.
