Big Corliti for the S. L. A T. Co't En larged PUot. Tho new engine and fly wheel for the power house of the Salem Light & Trac tion Co's power plant has arrived and lie on a flat car near tho freight depot. The engine is a 20x48 Columbian Cor liss of 300 horeo powei. It is so plain and simple in construction that it hardly looks like a full fledged engine, but mora like a section of the hind leg of a Brobdignagian grasshopper. The flywheel is In two sections. It Is 18 feet In diameter, with a 32 inch lace, 24,400 pounds. This new ensiuo will bo set up in tho extension recently erected at tho south side of the power house wliero the ce ment foundations are already prepared. It is a work of much nicety to set up and adjust the new machinery, and it will be several weeks before the now en gine will be turned over. Another largo dynamo Is to bo added to tho plant and the whole business will be hooked up in such a way that either of the two largo engines can bo used to run the whole plant, or any part of It, or both may bo used at once, so that no minor accident can interrupt the service. THE JEFFERSON DRIDGE. IsDasterous anl Sally In Need of Repairing Says the Review. If our memory is correct, and we think it is, county Judge J. H. Scott promised somo weeks sinco to at once look after tho repairing of the wagon bridge crossing the Santiam ut this city, but as vet has not done so. Wo are of course awaro that many demands are made upon Judge Scott's time, and that he cannot comply with all at tho eame time but this bridgo, especially the west approach, is in a dangerous. condition, the decking being full of holes, and the entire structure is getting shaky and needs overhauling. Thero is a heavy travel over It, and further neglect in the way of repairs is moro than likely to result in a suit for damages. Nothing is gained by procrastination in a caeo of this kind and wo trust the necessary action will bo taken at onco, At the New Salem lloclral. With tho improvements mado on all four floors tho now Salem hospital, now located In tho former Orphan's Home building on Asylum Avenue, Is a vory pleasant and commodious building. This great snm Is to ho paid out of tho public treasury each year for tho next 20 or 30 years. Concerning the Ship-Subsidy bill tho Now York World says: "The auimendments made to tho Ship Subsidy bill Improves it as a bono licence to our shipyard owners. It is dllllcult to see that they mako it hotter (or anybody else. They make it, as before, a bill to take millions of money from all tho pcoplo and glvo It out right to tliu ship-builders.
