My Dkaii Sistkh and Brether: Well,
I am horo after a very enjoyablo trip.
Wo landed safo and sound. Wo wero
out just sixteen days. I was awful sea
sick seven days, but'it did mo good, for
I novor felt bettor In my llfo than I do
now, with tho oxception of an awful bad
cold. But you can bo sure I doctor that,
'or peoplo are dying horo by tho dorons
with smallpox and pneumonia.
I landed hero nil O K and fortuno
favored mo. I went right to work for
Mrs. Lltt. 8ho arrived on tho steamer
ahead of mo, and was all ready for busi
ness. I refused flvo dollars a day and
my uoaru, out it was to tako casli in a
restaurant. That is too public, as well
as meeting bo many horrible people, and
you novor know when a bullet is coming
your w.ay. Whoro I am is much better
and almost as good pay.
Tho weather is grand nnd it never gets
dark in tho summer. At 11:30 Inst night
wo started out to mako n call. I work
from noon until 10 at night. Storoa novor
close, Sundays or nights, but thero is no
business In tho morning.
As to whether there is gold In tho
country or not, it is hard to say until It
rains and thoy can mako n clean-up
along the beach. Tho Steamers leaving
hero aro taking out more peoplo than
thoy brought In. But they nre peoplo
who novor should havo como In here at
all. They aro bound to give thoplaco n
black eye.
I llko it and am going ns stay as long
ao possible. If, nftor the clean-up, there
Is any money horo I will Btay all wintor
and go Into some Utile business for my
self. Mr. and Mrs. Qulnton aro awfully
good to mo. nnd I don't want for a thing.
It is a sight, landing horo. For nino
mile along tho boach there is frlcght
piled up as high as your head. Most of
it is big heavy mining machinery that
Is no good in this county nt all, and will
novor bo moved from tho beach. It is a
a pity, for some men invested thousands
of dollars in it, and aro turning back
ick at heart. In tho last two days three
men havo killed themselves.
Thero are many lights, and gamb
ling nnd dauco halls aro doing a fine
business. Arthur West was on tho same
steamer with me. Ho brought in beef
cattlo. May Dickinson called to sec mo
today. Tho first person I mot was Hor
ace Willi j. Hoisas thin nsn rail.
