clerk, Carrlo Shaw document clerk, and
Mrs. Kato J. Young press reporter.

Tho entertainment of tho visitors
Tuesday ovonlng was uniquo In concep
tion and very successful in execution.
About 8 O'clock tho delegates gathered
at Tho Willamette hotel. Tho Ealem
band furnished several pieces of music
and Albert Shaw gave an exhibition of
trick bicyclo riding.
A procession was then formed, with
the band in tho load, tho lady delegates
of the Degrco of Honor next, and tho
Workmen following in a double column.
Marching up Stato street to Willson
Avonuo tno crowd dispersed Itself, over
tho lawn and in tho largo refreshment
tent. Many hundreds of tho general
public turned out, and thoro wcro prob
ably a thousand people on tho ground
Tho band played and tho delegates filled
up the tables In tho tont and wero served
with Ico cream, cake, otc, by tho ladies
of tho Salem lodgo.
Thon tho assombly was callod to order
by Tronk Davey,who in his usual happy
stylo, welcomed tho visitors on hulialf of
tho Raicm lodges.
Ho Introduced Supremo Master Work
man W. A. Walker, of Wisconsin, who
responded in n manner which highly
pleased his auditors. Ho knows how to
giyo taffy, and he spread it on with a
trowel, not but what his encomiums on
the Oregon grand lodge, tho city, the
climate and tho beautiful young ladios
wero fully deserved. Ho also knows how
to toot tho horn of tho Ancient Order of
United Workmon, and ho did it In a
humorous but earnest manner,and with
out saying anything in tho least dis-
agrcoauio auout any otlier order or sys
tem of insurance Ho was liborally ap
plauded.

lodge was principally taken up with gen
erul discussions of the questions coming
tin for decision. No revolutionary action
of any kind was taken. Tho Workmen
have raised tho per capita tax on sub
ordinate lodges from (1.75 to $1.80 per
yoar, payablo monthly. The Degrco of

Wm. Wright better known to ocry
man, woman and child, and dog in
Salem, as "Uncle Billy," has returned
from Capo Nome, and to say that he is
hnnnv wouldn't hall do justice to tho
lob. Ho smiled clear aronnd to tho
back of his neck, ond olmost cried for
iov as he related his wondderful tale. 1
It's a plain unvarnished tale, by the
way, that will interest overyono who
wants to know tho facts about tho new
North country.
Tho party had a good trip up on tho
steamer Nome City. It was crowueu,
but treatment was pretty good every
thing considered. They wero tlircodays
in tho ice, "tho finest refrigerator I ever
saw. and a cooler atmosphere than 1 ex
pect to -find either sldo of eternity," re
marked the facetious Billy. Tho steamer
rescued two wrecks going up, and en
joyed tho privilege of being rcscuad from
a similar fate on hor return.
Billy only spent nino days at N'omo,
"long enough, too," as ho expressed it.
At home by the way, Uncle Hilly spends
his time grinding scissors, soiling horso
radish, and otherwise sharpening up
tho tools, wits and appetites of tho na
tives. Ho regretted very much that ho
dld'nt tnko along a good smily of horto
radish, for it' was about the only thing
there wasn't plenty of unless It was
gold, and his fortuno would havo been
made. The beach is lined with white
tents for sixteen miles, 'tho length of
Main street, and as much further as you
caro to Imagine. All tho way up tho
sailors and men employod on tho steam
er talked up tho wonderful go'd pros-
poctsso enthusiastically that tho sailors
and other employes wore worked np to
fover heat to got a grab at It, and all
decided to quit, but most of them
learned so much In a few days there
that thoy wcro glad to ho tnken back
for return trip. Billy says ho looked
with all his might (or nine days (or op
portunity to improvo his fortunes, and
then was glad to be able to get return
passage without having to mortgage
his shirt. As the Nome City was about
to pull out on her return trip, Hilly
costed the captain.
"Cap, I'm hero without money and
want to get home."
"Just put on your truck and come
along," was the uncxcctcd response,
and Undo Billy worked his passage
home, as wiser if not wealthior man.
When ho left tho steamer at Seattlo tho
Captain bid him good bye, iiiul told him
If he wore ever about whon the Nome
City was about to tako a trip to consider
his passago as good as paid. Mr. Wright
is about j 125 out, but thinks tho expert-
oneo was, cheap.
Ho says there are thousanes of tho
best people In tho world up at Nome,
and some that are not so good, There
Is good ordor everywhere, unless you go
into tho tough neighborhoods, and thoro
thoy register about a murder a day. Tiie
better clasu there help each otlier like
saints and try to make tho best of tliolr
luck. Ho estimates that fully a million
dollars' worth of machinery of all sorts
is piled up on tho beach that will never
1)0 used for anything, and that It will
oventually sink in tho sand.
Ho estimates that over a hundred
preachers are up there, but very few of
thorn are making any uso of their relig
ion, or working at their trade, as it
wero. Hq says that hu needed all that
ho had, and brought back what ho had
left. Whon asked "What did you learn,
Uncle Billy?" ho respended: "I learned
that I was a d d fool, and that's worth
a good deal to a man, but you ,'con't use
it to feed tho babies."
He says tho water is fairly good in
summer, vory cold, right off tho ico, but
they claim It is poisoned by tho moss
roots as soon as the rains begin.
Ho reports tho Ealem boys doing as
well as tho average, but that is mighty
poorly. He saw John Kaiser out with
his pan working a few hours before he
loft, well and happy. Gus Kaiser had a
touch of fever. Thomas Holman was
well. He had just taken a sea bath, the
coldest on record, and said he enjoyed it.
Holman will return this fall. Charley
Wolx was fat as over. Johu Morelock
had been sick, but waswoll whon Wright
left. Mrs. D, L. Fleeter was in good
spirits, and expected to make a fortuno
in the restaurant and laundry business.
Mrs. Nichol's hospital has a good loca
tion, and some patients.
Mr, Wright is convinced that there is
gold all over that country, but not in
paying quantities for tho common miner.

ging, ho says, will yield all tho way
from that down to nothing, but mostly

that Humphreys, who was real estate
broker, becamo despondent over tinnn-
