In accordance with your request I
herewith submit what I shall call a per
sonal opinion and in no sense a criticism
of the world's acknowledged greatest
nlnntst. Paderewskl. Greatest ns an
Interpreter of all styles of music, and
not a specialist of any ono or two com
posers. Unoqualcd in that magnetic
power which It is claimed can command
tho adulation of tho pnblic-these aro
the attributes said to bo possessed by
Padcrowskl and on which his famo Is
built. Having read thceo comments,
my anticipation In hearing Padcrowskl
rnr tint drat time can scarcely be de
scribed, so great were my expectations.
To bo as brief as possible I shall men
tion only a few of tho numbers which
seomed to me especially gi 1, and olbcis
In wlilch my expectations wero not
realized. The opening number on pro
gram, was tlio colossal airuemro ui
Beethoven, Opus 53, wlioso majesty was
intensified by PaderowBki's prodigious
attack upon the gigantic chords. And
tho sweeping runs that appeared and
vanished almost instantaneously,
breathed through tho piano Into tho car
of the listener as sweetly and caressingly
as does an ocean breozo greet one when
stirred nml wafted by tlio turbulent
waves, and whoso freshness lingers long
after its toucli has receded. Magnifl
cont In conception, tho towering strength
of this grand Sonata was most nobly
portrayed In Padcrewskt's interpreta
tion. It was unqualifiedly the best
rendition of a Uethovcn member that I
havo ever heard on tho plauo.

Pachman, who so recently played tho
a'lie number to me in a superior

effect never before heard, and if his
effort was to present to the listener tho
absolute burial of all earthly hopes the
result was faultless. No anguish came
through thoso tonus which Paderewskl
chose to play an octavo lower than
written; only abject hopolosjiiOM. It
was a relief wlion tho finale was begun.
