Tub. Journal is in receipt of a copy of
tho handsome souvenir book recently
published by Romeo Gilbert,
of this city. It consists of ICO pages of
pen drawings, pictures mado by Mr.
Gilbert while with the Second Oregon
boys In Manila. The pictures aro sup
plemented by good description?,
which latter, with tho introduction,
wero written by Chaplain Gilbert. On
tho whole it is a work of art which will
be treasured by theuioinborsof tho regi
ment and their friends, not only as a
personal souvenir, but for its historic
value. Tho title of tho volume, which
isa largo quarto, is "Our Now Pot
sessions" and the work throughout Is
of such quality as to add Mr, Gilbert's
name to a list of promising artists
turned out by Marion county. It is
understood that tho book Is meeting
with good sale at fl per volume.

The entertainment given by tho Ham.

ence. Tho. Balem people know a. good
thing when they see it, and when such
an entertaining play is In this city It is

How He Has Served the Rest of the

Tho first cold weather of this season
has prevulled hero for n couple of days;
but so far as heard from has douo no
damage. In fact it has hardly been
cold, oxcopt in comparison witli tho
vory mild tcmioraturo which lias pre
vailed heretofore this wintor. Heavy
frosts for the last two nights is the ex
tent of tho cold snap.
Hoports from other sections of tho val
ley Indicate that they have had about
tho same sort of visitation.
Tho frost scorns to have extended from
Forest Grove to Junction City. It is
not believed that any daraago lias been
done to fruit, as tho cool weather for
sovoral days before had tho effect of
checking tho toudency of the sap to
start, caused by tho previous warm
weather, and tho frost is regarded us
distinctly beneficial.
Wind and Water Damages.
An ludopendcnco correspondent says
the water tower of the Monmouth water
plant was blown over Monday night and
completely demolished.
The cable of tho ferry, which was
broken during tho high water, has not
bocu replaced as yet, on account of somo
right-of-way dllllculty.

W. S. Taylor, stock inspector for
Marion county, went to Turner today
after spending a couple of days In Salem
and vicinity.
Ho found a good many scabby sheep
around horo, and ordered thorn all
dipped. Ho had recently mado a trip
up on tho Ablqiia and toward Silverton,
where ho also found some scab among
the sheep, as it pervails in nearly all
sections of the county.
By energetic measures, this disease
had been entirely stamped out last
spring; but it has been brought in
again by bands of sheep from other
counties.
Many sheop have been brought In
from Clackamas county where there has
been no stock Inspector, and from Linn
and Lane counties, where the inspectors
do not understand, or do not attend very
strictly to their business.
Marion county buyers go to other sec
tions and buy cheap bands of sheep, to
find when they get them home that thoy
are Infected with disease.
Ono man recently drove in six hun
dred from Lane county, which were ap
parently healthy, but ono week after
their arrival hero ho found them badly
affected with scab. Ho has dipped them
three times and now has them falrjy
healthy. A fow aro also affected with
grub in tho head.
There is somo hog cholera in tho north
end of tho county. Insixsctor Taylor
has quarantined all the bands of hogs
known to bo diseased and ordered the
sick animals killed. Ho has also notified
all butchers of tho bands in which the
troublo exists, to protect tho public.
This disease was brought in from tho
east sovoral years ago, and has caused
much loss. Ono man recently lost his
whole band of 21 head.
Tho utmost caro is needed to prevent
the spread of tho disease, as it is carried
from ono band to another in the clothing
or boots of partlos passing back and
forth.
Mr. Taylor tells of ono man whom he
warned against the disease in a band of
hogs, across tho road from his farm, ad
vising him not to go near them with
out changing Ills clothes. Tho farmer
replied that he would attend to all that.
So ho went and took a good look at tho
sick swine and brought tho diecaeo back
to his own baud on his boots or cloth
ng, which ho d(d not change.
All stock has been doing well so far
this winter and is coming through in
good condition.

dling without n license. Ho had been
selling alleged gold rings on tho street.
Ho was soutenced to 5 days, and sen
tence was suspended for three hours to
give the fellow a chanco to leave town or
get n Job.

Hoefer & Zorn of Ghampocg Held Up
Tuesday Evening.
Between Three and Four Hundred ' Dol
lars Secured News Seems to Travel
Slowly in This Country,
A bold hold-up occourred Tuesday
evening near Champoeg, when
two masked men robbed Hoefer & Zorn
of between $300 and (400.
John Hoefer and Ills partner, Casper
Zorn, with their two hired men, Lester
Sprague, and Jas. Lawton, hud just sat
down to supper, when two pistol Bhots
were fired just outsldo of tho window
oponliig out on a porch. Immediately
two rovolvers wero thrust through the
window by a man Btandingon the porch,
scattering tho glass in all directions and
covering tho men at tho table. At tho
came time anothorman from tho kitchen
and standing in the door of the dining
room, covered tho four occrpants of tho
house.
Tho man outside then camo in and
went through the pockets of tho victims
but secured nothing of value. 'Ono of tho
hired men had $10 in his pocket, but on
Mr. Hoefer protesting agnlost robbing a
working man, ho was allowed to keep it.
Mr. Hoefer was then ordered to go in
to tho other room and open tho safe,
which ho did witli alacrity.
The robbers displayed perfect
familiarity with the promises, and
though the safe is mashed by a dummy
door they know its exact location.
There were between (300 and (-100 in
tho safe, also a gold watch belonging to
Mr. Hoefor. Tho robbers lefUho watch
but took the drawer containing tho
money, and left, throwing tho draw
away at a short distance from tho house.
Mr. Hoefor went immediately to
Champoeg and endeavored to tolephono
to Sheriff Durblu. Ho was led to believe
by tho operator that it was all right and
the sheriff would bo notified. (Wednes
day morning ho telephoned to District
Attomoy llayden, but was Informed
that ho would have to como to Salem
and swear out a complaint.
On Ids arrival in this city last evening
Mr. Hoefer was somewhat surprised to
find that ho scorned to le bringing the
first news of the affair.
Hoofer A Zorn aro extensive farmers
and laud owners, also doing a littlo
money lending on tho side, and they aro
the next to the largest taxpayers In
Marlon county.

NICHELSOX. At his home 3 miles
east of Scotts Mills in Clackamas
county, Jon. 23, George Nlchelson,
uued 13 years, 3 months and 22 days,
of pneumonia fever.
Ho leuvetCa wife, llvo brothers and
one sister and a host of friends to mourn
his death. Tho remains were laid to
rest in the Thomas cemetery near Silverton.

lady of good business qualifications and
