sentative of tlio Oregon Hopgrowers'
Association, said last night thai the
olllco at Salem now has over 10,000 bales
of hops listed. The pool has been
growing more rapidly in tho last two
days than over before, over 2000 bales
having been brought in through tho Ha
lom olllco alone. Samples of nil tho
hops held by this olllco have been in
spected nnd tho hops classified nccording
to qunlity.
Tlio olllcials of the association do' not
distinguish between "classifying" nnd
"grading" hops, but use tho former term
because it is loss objectionable to hop
growers. It Is noted, however, that,
when a buyer purchases from tlio as
sociation he "grades" the hops himself.
When the proceeds of sales nro divided
among tho members of the pool tho di
vision will bo made iikii tho basis of
the "classification."

tho Salem Flouring Mill Co. will In tho
near future begin work on a now mill to
replnco the ono destroyed by flro last
fall. This was determined upon somo
timo ago, and tho onlcors of the com
pany havo been examining plans and
specifications submitted to them, with n
view to securing tho best.
Tho now mill may not be bo largo as
the old ono but it will havo tho latest
Improved machinery nnd be strictly up
to dale in every particular.
With tho object of adopting tho best
plans poesiblo, tho olllcers of the com
pany have delayed In accepting nny un
til they ehould hnvo heard from soveral
different parties whom they had invited
to Bubmlt plans.
The representative of tho last one of
these parties was expected to arrive In
Portland last evening from the East.
After his arrival, tho plans for the
now mill will be determined upon and
the work of construction will commence
in tho near future.

mouth of North Mill crcok might bo
put In order and run, instead of building
n new one, proves to have been entirely
without foundation. Tlio head miller of
tho association, of which Mr. Wilcox Is
tho head and which controls a number
of mills at dlfferenc points, wos in Sa
lem i conplo ol weeks ago to look over
tlio ground, nnd he positively stated
that no such plan would lie adopted.
This is good news for Salem. It speaks
much louder for this city as a business
point than would tho blackened ruins
of a manufacturing establishment of
nny kind. This placo needs moro self
supporting Institutions giving employ
ment to the people.
Tho flouring mills not only give em
ployment to fifteen or twenty men but
tlioy bring trade to tlio city from tlio
farmers hi all directions, and it distrib
utes cold cash among tho people.
It is gratifying to learn that tho mills
will be rebuilt without unnecessary
delay.

But Gets His Man.
A warrant was issued in Justice John-
boii'b court for tho arrest of Max Stillln
ger, cliarglng him with the crime of as
sault and battery upon tho person of C.
W. Togan, preferred by his victim. The,
warrant was placed in the hands of
Sheriff Durbiu, and after n lively chase
the sheriff succeeded in making the nr
rest. Sheriff Durhin called nt Btillin
ger's house, which Is known us the
Half-way House, in North Snlcm, and
after considerable difficulty in trying to
gain admission, discovered that ills man
had left by a rear door nnd was making
n lively run toward tho river bank
Shorlfl Durhin immediately gave chnsa,
and ho succeeded in catching hia man
on High street. Stillinger's intention
was to go down the river to Lincoln, and
catch a lioat, but changing his mind,
stinted for tho deot,and Sheriff Durhin
hailed a parsing buggy nnd overtook
him. Ho was arraigned In court and
