Tho conservative and na tionalist organs have accused the gov ernment of provoking yestorday's blood shed by unjustlllablo arrests. Tho rad ical Revisionist and Republican paets insist on the necessity of more firmness on tho part of the ministry and declaro that the ministers must defend tho re public against tho secret maohlnatloiiH andattemptsiat an uprising. Tho rod leu press protests against the disorders and hopes tho imjIIco will prevent the reoc currence of them. Paius, Aug. 21. From today all churches will 1ms guarded by pickets, and Republican guards and detachments of Infantry and cavalry will bo held in icadinees for eventualities. Tho damage done by rioters to the church of St. Joseph yesterday Is estimated at 8,000 francs. Tho church is surrounded by a cor don of tiolico unil no one is allowed to approach tho building. Paris was Sunday the sceuo of most serious disturbances, recalling some aspects of tho commune. Sebastian Fame and Faborot, well-known revo lutionary anarchists, wore tho ring-load ers. Among other things he said that tho anarchists should bo masters of the streets. The police then interfered and dhtlodged Faure and Faborot, making three arrests. Tho crowd at this point disturbed, but a column of demonstra tors, headed by Faure and Ilenrid'Horr, made for the Place de la Nation. Tho pjllue broke through the column and a utruggle for tho mastery followed. Shots were fired, and M. tioulllur, commissary of illco, was twice stabbed with a knife. Tho crucifix above was made tho target for missiles, nnd the figure of tho Savior was fractured in soveral f places. Then, whllo rancorous voices sang tho "Carnutgnoto," tho chairs were carried outsinc, piled up and set on lire iu tho center of tho square fronting tho church. When this stago was reached, tho cru cifix was pulled down and thrown into tho Haines. Suddenly tho cry was raised that tho statuo of tho Virgin had been forgotten, and tho crowd returned and toro this down also. An attempt was mmlo to fire tho choir of St. Joseph's with petroleum.and the firemen w'ero called In to quench the flamos. Several parishioners wore severoly mauled in their efforts to de fend tho church from sacrilege. Tho church is situated iu the toorc8t quar ters of tho city. No disorders of any kind occurred in the fashiouablcdistrict. At length tho ollicors liegan to gain the mastery. A scoro of anarchists took refuge in an adjacent house. Others en trenched themselves lu the belfry, and llercely defended themselves by shower ing missiles on the Republican guardn, but finally these were dislodged. Twenty anarchists were nrrestoit, taken to tho police station, searched nnd found to lie carrying revolvers, loaded Htlcks ami knives. When tho polico ontored tho church the anarchists had set flro to tho pulpit. The interior of the cdiflc was a com plete wreck.
