Toledo, 0., has in puccessful opera tion two plants) for heating housed by hot water from a common center. From one center 100 houses have been supplied amply withheatduriugtho past winter, with the exception of a few riiiyn during extreme cold; and ftixty-soven houses from the other, the mot distant being alKJUt a mile apart. One plant has Iwcn in operation four years. A man named Yaryan Ih the in ventor and patontee of tho system,, and thoro in good prospect that it will bo extensively introduced. Eviuistnn, 111., t conHidering its employment. Tho progress is said to Ikj considerably cheaper than by uko of coal, mid vastly more convenient, as it only requires to 1)0 turned on in tho fall and turned off in tho spring. HoiiHcscan Iks left vacant in tho win ter timo as freely as in the summer, without danger to plants or water pipes. Tho system must Iw especially adapted to tho needs of the cities of tho North Pacific, as thoro would lw no fovero cold to test its efficiency. There is a system of electric lighting connected with the plants. Tho city of Lvons, France, is laying af pavement of glass, or ceramic stone or coramo-crystal, or rather did lay a jor tlon In Octolier last, and has hud heavy traffic upon it uiKl.it shows no more wear and tear than ordinary stono pavement. It Is claimed for it that it has greater re slstanco than stono, that ice will not readily form on it, it being a resistaut o old and less dirt accumulates on it thus causing it to 1 more hygienic. Tho glass is laid in eight inch squares so closoly fitted that water will not enter tho crevlccr1. Tho Revue yo Doux Mondes pro potcB tho erection of a glees palace at the Paris exiHisition, to exhibit its valuo. Who knows but multitudus of peoplo may yet como to "live in glass houses" ut which people may throw stones all they please ? The Architectural Fooloty of Franco says this curtamio stonu can be mude abundantly useful for loth practical and decorative purjiosos. This new product is obtained from broken glass, boated to an enormous tompanituro and moulded by hydraulic force. Hut what they torm tho devitrifled glass has the same comjiositlon as glass, with all the physi cal and chomiottl qualities of glana ox copt transparency. P. C. Advocate. Pr. James K. It is said that a largo amount of wood will bo brought to this market hereafter, from tho Santiani, and the wood haulers of this vicinity arc somewhat discom posed therebv. It is said that an at tempt will be made to capture all the wood contracts of the statu institutions, the penitentiary, asylum and capital, and ship the wood in by rail in largo quantities, shutting out from that niai ket tho local wood-choppers. If tlds is done, it will tend to lower the price of wood here, as It will throw uioii the retail market the thousands of cords which would otherwise be used by the state. Tho Salem Light and Traction Co. lias been getting its fuel from tho San tiani ever since tho local market recov ered from tho extreme depression of a couple of years ago, The wood can be cut in the forest and shipiMid in here by rail cheaper than it can bo out on our available timber land and hauled in by wagon, and it is probable that quite a revolution may occur in tho method of supplying wood for tho town. This, in fact, has become almost a necessity as tho wood timber within hauling dis tance is fast being exhausted. A man in the wood business, who has investigated the mattor carefully, ex pressos the opinion that there is not now. over AQOO conbi of good body llr wood within reasonable hauling dis tance of tho city. ii ' mm How's This?
