The Seti tetico line tt world of mowing In the the nfan referred to, ns we wIRh tod connection In which it Ih used. It rrfers to a man who has taken quite a prominent part as a reformer In the politics of the state, having had a place on the Union fctato flokt lfiit year, and then, Immediately after his defeat, taking charge of und running a Ilepubllcnn paper. "IP HE WERE ONLY SJN0ERE IN HIS CONVICTIONS ho would do the reform cause a world of good." Of how many "reform" politicians Ir this true? Entirely too many: and therein lies the groat drawback to tile cause of reform. The "practical politician," tho man who makes a study and a buMnos of polities, Is not once In ton thousand times a genuine reformer. Ho "docs politics" for what there Is In It, and his objects, his Ideals and his methods of procedure arc nil diametrically op posed to any genuine and fundamen tal reform. Yet when a reform movement Is started It soon rails into the rut or old party methods, and then those very men come to the front. They arc familiar with all the tricks or the trade. Thoy know how to pull tho wires; to lay their plans; to make their oargalns; to work the primaries; to steer tho nominating convention; and rho rcatilt Is that when a reform ticket Is Anally put out It Is usuully loaded down with a lot of rlngboned, spavined nnd broken down political hacks, who arc In tho reform move ment only because they hare been crowded and kicked away from tho public crib by the more astute bood lers In the older parties. A move ment headed by and a ticket rnndo up of such mon Is heavily handicapped from the start, no matter how worthy the cause. They do not command tho respect, but becomo the laughing stock of tho very element In tho older parties from whom help must come If reform Is to Biiocced. When wo try to permanently Im provo political conditions, working under tho very system of parly man agement nnd nomination by whlnh mo prureHiiomii oooaiors tunc suc ceeded for so many years In thwarting aud defying the will of tho people, we aro leaning on n more than broken reed. Tho first step toward reform, a stop too, that wilt help and not hinder ovoryothor reform, Is to tako tho nominating machinery out or the hands or tho "party iuauagor"oru small selfish clement or ono party, and placo Hut tho source of till power, In tho hands of thopcoplout large. t .., trouble, Und that trouble romes to them. The Idle man may succeed In having fesi than his share of the wrild'ework to do, but nature pro portioning the circumstances to the work, contrives that this little shall be much and hard to him. It IS true, there are men who die of overwork; but many moro die or sel fishness and IdlonoK. Wlirrc men break down by ovorwurk, it Is most commonly from want of duly ordering their lives, and neglect or the ordi nary conditions of physical health.
