The American loss was only six wounded. 4:05 p. m. Gen. Wheaton attacked and captured the city of Pasig, this afternoon. The enemy made a stand for an hour, but at the end of that time were forced to retreat, The loss to the Filipinos is thirty killed, and sixteen pris oners. Manila, March 13.-At daylight Wheaton's divisional brigade was drawn up on tho ridge behind San Pedro Macatl.a mllo south of town. The adyauce was sounded at 0:30 a. in., the cavalry leading the column at a smart trot, across the open to the right, eventually reaching a clump of trees commanding the rear of Guada lupe. Supported by tho Oregon vol unteers tho advance force opened a heavy lire on the rebels. The response was feeble, apparently coming from a few men In every covert. While the rkhtof the column was swinging to wards the town of Pasig. the loft, ad vanced, pouring volleys Into tho bush. A small body of rebels made a deter mined stand at the Guadalupochurch, but the enemy was unablo to with stand tho assault. At 7:30 the the river gunboat started towards Pasig. The rebols were first encountered by the vessel In a Junglcnear Ouadalupo. Steaming slowly the gunboat poured a tcrrlllc tiro from gatllng guns luto the brush. For an hour the whir ring .rapid-fire guns alternated with the booming of heavy pieces on board, rn the meantime, Scnlt's battery nshnrc was sh clllng tho trenches and J driving the enemy bacK. The artillery then advanced to the ridge of bamboo and drove a few of the enemy's sharpshooters away with volleys from tho carblnos. The artil lery ndvanced and mot no opposition. In the mean time the Infantry had been sent forward In extended order, the Washington regiment resting on tho bank of the river, each regiment deploying on reaching Its nation and furnishing Its own support. The en tire column wheeled towards the river, driving tho euemy towards tho supports, and then advancing on Guadalupe. The artillery moyed to the ridge, commanding Pasig and Uurteros. Uy this time the enemy was In lull lllght along the line over a mile long, and tlrlntt was discontinued temporarily In order to give the troops a st before making the attack on Pasig. The enemy's loss Is be lieved to be revere. At this stage of the engagement it was raining heav ily. This aftcrnon tho Twentieth and Twenty-second Inrantry and seyon companies of tho Oregon volunteers marched to Sun Pedro Macatl to Join General Wheaton's ccw divisional btigadlor, which Is to consist of tho Twentieth aud Twenty-second In fantry, eight companies of tho Wash ington volunteers, seven companies of the Oregon volunteers, thrco troops of cavalry (mounted), and a battalion of llKht artillery. Although tho rain which fell this morning has cooled ttw temperature to 82 dog., many dropped from the ranks, overcomo by tho heat. Seyeial soldiers were sunstruck In tho streets of Maulla this morning. Most of them wero not acclimated. Hrlgradlcr-General Charles King has recovered from Ills In disposition, and resumed command at the San Pedro Macatl bridge. The enemy are very active north of the. river, thongh not doing nny thing now. Manila, March 13. 7.55. After a short rest Gen Wheaton resumed his attack on Pasig. Scotts battery sup ported by two companies of tlm 20th regiment advanced on Guadalupe by a road along the river bank, tho re mainder of the 20th and 22nd regi ment following with a reserve of the Oregon Volunteers. Atll:3Ca. in. the column came In contact with the enemy and gunboat steamed to thcflrlng line and cleared the Jungle on botli sides, while a bat tery took a position on a bluff at the the right. The first shot from the American (Held pices at 1200 yards range dislodged u gun of the en emy at Pasig. After the town had. been shelled the 30tti regiment .lined up on the bluff and tho 22nd took u position on the left of the placo with cavalry In tho center, whereupon tho enemy re treated to tho town. Tho gunboat then moved Into the bund opposite. The lire on tho rebel position was maintained along the whole American Mine until 2:20 p. m. when propara- tlonu were mado for the attack, At 3 p. iu, a gunboat started In pur suit of the enemy's armed tug chasing her to tho lake. At 3:30 p, m. a large body of tho enemy was discovered working around tho right flank and the Twentieth regiment moved to command the ridge. Tho rebels wero met opposite tho Paleros, but tho enemy boltcds-Thlrty rebels wero killed, It) taken prisoners, and tho Amerlcads lost six men wounded. The whole American line bivouacked at 5 o'clock. About 700 rebels are reported as marching north ward a few miles to the southwest. Going, to Build an Empire. The fol lowing Is an extract from a lotter from Major Thcodoro Sternborg, pay master, United States' volunteers, to an oWccr of tho wardopartmont. It Is dated Manila, January 22, 1800. "I wish you would call tho atten tion of tho president and secretary of war to this: There Is not less thnn 10 per cent of the volunteers who honestly wish to remain In these Islands and make their homoJ I'orc and cngago In agriculture, lumber ing and mining. Take but one Item: Cattle thrive here: It Is tho finest stock country I ever saw. The Orient can bo sup plied with beef from here, Now, these soldiers wish tob! discharged here, with travel pay. Tills will be their capital. Those who aro In earnest will and can do anything in reason to prove It. "There arc also many regular ol dlers enlisted under order 10. These men think they should be paid travel If they Intend settling In theso Is lands. Now, all of this Is based upon tho Idea that the United States will retain some sort of ttitorcst In theso Islands.
