M.Edwards.a cloth Inn salesman of Lewiston, had receiv ed authentic Information that after years of Investigation ho has como Into a fortune amounting to nearly ?1,000,000. Tho tract of land Is In the business heart of tho city of New York. "The track embraces 45 acres extending from Battery street to Canal strcot and Includes all of the promontory which extends from Caual street out Into tho bay. Tho Kreat business blocks on Wall street and on Broadway, the Kovcrnuicnt building, postofllce, custom houses and mint are on this property. "This land was leased to KIok Georno 111, by the Edwards fumlly for colonial use prior to the revolutionary war for a period of 09 years. It was afterwards subject by a crown lease to a Dutch settlor uud later sold oil Into city lots Bubjeot to the terms of tho lease. Thus tho Edwards ownership was recognized prior to the revolution ary war. Later deeds were absolute, but tho Edwards heirs never lost slulit of their etiulty und when tho lease expired efforts were mado to establish title, but many reycrscs followed. "Accusations of forncry and bribery wero mado In connection with the claim until 12 ycarB uro, when -one of tho heirs llttedihlmsclf.ror tho contest aud ibcRiin tho work of establishing title for tho heirs of Robert Edward. "This man ilnally perfected an ab stractor title from tho crown grant In the llrst Instances aud then tie lcaso to tho crown for the use of the colony, then tho subtitle lease to tho Individual who sold oil loU buu Jcct to tho lcaso. It seems that all the rights of tho Edward helra vcro protected to avoid lapse of title by proscription uuder tho common law. Q'The copies of deeds and leases form perhaps tho most complete abstrnct of iltlo In tho civilized world, This work was complied by William Ed wards of Tennessee In 1870. He took tho case out of the hands of tho law yers 12 years ao. For ten years he worked Incessantly on the task, epcudlng a prlvato fortuue In tho work, but when he confronted tho ttt torucys of tho present holders of tho property In 1800 they udylsed a com promise. "Mr. Edwards was required to se cure identification through the seo retary of state of tho national govern ment before ho could 6ccurei tho evidence or title he required from tho archives of the English government. "Mr. Edwards had secured about 200 powers or nttornoys from the living hclrsof Robert Edwards. When Iiecaiuo to New York with his evi dence and a compromise waH proposed he entered Into au undei taking to quiet title for the sum of 1305,000,000. "Over 41,000,000 of this sum was placed on deposit and tho dato fixed for the distribution was September 0, 1800, "The heirs were quietly summoned to New York to transfer title and to secure for each a share of over a million dollars. "But Rome of tho heirs who were possessed or larfo fortunes rcrused to compromise for what they considered a small portion of the great estate. William Edwards, who had all but Unlshed the great work or his lite, was Insulted and grieved by tho ungraterul attitudo or these heirs and by tho Imputation that ho had ex ceeded hla authority. Ho dropped tho great work then and there. "Tho tltlo to the realty, however, was established and the holders ap plied to the courts for an order to quiet title. A suit was brought to compel the heirs of Robert Edwards to make a deed In accordance wit li the contract entered Into by their attorneys-in-fact by which tho heirs were to receive $305,000,000. This oontruct Is now held to be binding upon the helm and the compromise price of 305,000,000 Is ready for dis tribution. " .1, M.Edwards Is not Informed as to tho exact number or testators, but there are less than 300. nis falhcr'e family consisted or 10 children, full and half brothers and sisters. Soma of these are dead. Two sisters live, near Spokane, Mrs. J. S. Marney and Mrs. Emuiett Robinson. The brother, James J. Edwards, Is with tho Htcr lltiir Mercantile Company In Wulla Walla. Tho family borne li In Ten nesee. where the mothsr owns a homestead of 4800 acres of land. The father died several years ago. J. M. Edwards has been In tho In the employ of J. P.
