The money of Porto It In Is silver, and liefeso Is now worth alwut 10 'centS lirAuierlcin money. It will be necessary "to jrlve the Island a stable rate:pf exchange, tlict Is to Klve the rnoncy of flic Island a llxed value, In terms of gold An administration Journal states that there arc sev eral ways of doing this. One way is to buy up"' all the pesos and retire them, putting American dollars Into circulation In their place; but it objected that this would be demoral izing to bushier. Another plan would be to effect the displacement Kradually, by giving the peso an arti ficial value or, say, forty-live cents and kee.i It there by a policy or con vertibility at that rate, It being ex pected that In time the peso would be apt' to peek the treasury, and the American silver at Its nominal valua tion would coinc Into use. Change jif Climate Breaks5bown the Health of an Oregon Man What a Fow Bottlos of Hood's Snrsaparhla Did for Him. " Onr homo Is In Clark county, Wash incton. My llttlo boy was taken with asthma when only two years old, nnd grew worse until ho was five, when tbo physician advised us to tako him to a dry climate. I resolved to go to tbo great trheftt fields of Eastern Oregon and work In harvest, but I soon found my own health was failing. I could neither cat nor drink without getting sick. I was blind and dizzy. I procured a bottle of Hood's Hiunparllla and began taking it, and In a fow weeks I was well and nblo to work every day. My little boy is now taking Hood's Sarsnparilla with good results." D. Pattke, Wasco, Oregon. 9 Sarsa- patilla Is the licst- in fact the One Truo Blood 1'urtOer. Wc stopped at Stuart river but could not hear any news to encourage, us to stay there. So far this scorns In be the center. Mr. Ross has made arrangements with u friend of his to take us all out. next week on a prospecting trip. He thinks lie knons whcic there Is Just as jood a creek as any that ha been found, all they ask Isforustouo along and If we II rid anything to allow tliein the discovery claim that Is double the! size of common claims, but you must ' not think that our fortunes arc ma.le J when wc drive "our stakes as they arc 1 not all rich, by any uicr.ns Wc' met mon that have been here for' years and have not. struck anything One or our party, Mac Met 'lane has a brother lielo, has been here a year,) GOLD DUST WASHING POWDER. Another plan, said to be most fa vored by Secretary Gage, Is to retain the silyer pesos of Porto Rice so that they will represent Just what the' do now In yaluc, both to the native Porto Rlcan and the American, one side of the coin will be marked "one peso'' and the other will bo marked "40 cents." Tills will bo Porto Rlcan ' money on one face, and American money on the other, but kept lixedly at the present bullion value of tho silver without adding a big premium with United States credit behind It. The secretary propose 1 to niako gold the staudurd-of value and the medium of exchange . Tne silver will bo subsi diary coin, though a silver 40-cent piece will bo the size of an American dollar In tho stales. The gold coins will be stamped In the same way, so as to be perfectly plain to tho Porto Rlcan and to the Amerlcan, aud easily handled In exchange. Tho gold coin will bo a lOpeso plcco on one side, and a four-dollar pleco on the other ten pesos to tho Porto Rlcan and four dol lars to tho American. It will bo an interesting and In structive entertainment, to watcli the gyrations of the governments In its attempt to lind solid ground on which to found u currency bj stent for "tho colonies" without recognizing some of the economic truths which am now denied by Secretary Gage. The objection to tho Ural plan given above Is that It would demoralize bus iness by changing tho status of all debts. To arbitrarily raise tho value or tho peso to that of tho American dollar with which It corresponds In size, Would more than doublo every existing debt payable In pesos. Tills Is cjcurly recognized even by Secro ;itary Gage.iypt tho American, dollar has already gone through tho process or.artlllclal doubling or value, by tho appreciation or gold.. Tho difference In that tho process has been extended over a term or years, and, having lived through It, wo propose to con tinue It in(ellnltoly. Fortunately for the Porto Ricuris, however, the artl- uciai -raising-' or 1110 tigures on a suote Is" ucKnowjedged to bo unjust to tho debtor, when It Is dono all at once. The ohjectlou to tho becond plan Is -that, tlio urtoiiuuleil Greslmiii law would seem to precludo ,hc driving out or tho 10 cent peio by the 100 centdollar. Ofcourso tho robbing nr debtors, by raising the yultio 0f the peso rrom -10 cents to 45 cents, would to n small matter In tho eves or 'honest money" mon. - uage, is probably tho best that could be formulated, under tho cir cumstances. It would undoubtedly work smoothly so long usliulllon val. uo-.or tho, ptwuo would not rise above lu nutnliinl value. If how ever, tho rumors of tlio early opening of the -Indian mluu should prove reliable, ,tlie gold prleo of silver would rlso, und a coin stamped on one side,' "one peso," and on the other side, "forty cents." would In deed bo uu "object lesson" and a peelaele for gods nnd men. We started on the last day or May. lost about a day and a hair at the canyon and White Hums rapids; wc landed there ut noon and did not get through till tlio next day arternoon. I tell you this Is rather a rrlglitftil place to one who is not used lo handling a boat. Wc hired u pilot to tako our boat through and gave him $:10, that was only $2 HO each and I thought It was a good Investment. To make the boat as llgnt as possible the two pilots only wanted live men at the oars and the pilots steered rrom Tore and art and you may depend on It wc Tell good when we saw her plunge out or tho While Horse Rapids all sarc and sound. She did not oven dip any water. Three or our boys ran the small boat. A Mr, Lamb went through 2 or .'I times the llrst day wc were there and sccnicd to enjoy It, he was used to boating on rough water. Mr. Lamb and wire and little boy Joined us at Caribou crossing. They came up from Portland on tho same boat that wc did and brought up 11 lino span ol horses and he got all his feed bjrnt up besides koiuo other llilngsatfakagway, and business was so dull thero that they concluded to try their fortunes In this big country. It would tako 11 long letter to tell you all tho particulars of our trip down tliiougli tho lakes and river, tho Ico crowded us on a sand bar twice on the lower cud or Marsh Lake. Most or tho hoys pulled 011 their rubber boots and soon got her olf. Tlio lee was not dangerous as It was all ground up llko mush. Wo ran on another sand bar a llttlo above hero and wo all had to hunt up our rubber boots and push her back. Tho water was so swift that It made It pretty liaid work. Wo did some of our cooking on tho scow, but It was too crowded to do It so wo inado to the shore about 8 or and got supper and fought mosquitoes till wo went to sleep and generally covered uphead and all, With ono of our tarpaulins bo they could not lind us. They did not bother us much when wo wero out on tho water, and so far they 1110 not so bad us I expected to lind them, and one peculurlty about It there aio vory row here. Well it Is nearly 11 o'clock and it Is lustasllgh as it wouhl be on a cloudy day and it lis Just so ail night. You would not call It dark in the least, about like it would be a few minutes after the sun goes down. They say If wego on a high mountain on the longest day wc can sec the sun all night. It I o'clock and I must go tb bed. I rather dislike to go to bed before dark but such is life In the far north. The weather l very pleasant and has been nil the way down, no rain or storm.
