possibility of German Interferences In
Manila, said:
"As a matter of fact, I do not
apprehend any forcible Interference
In tho Philippines on tho part of
Germany. 1 doubt very much whether
Germany would do anything more
than to land marines possibly, to pro
tect tho Interests of German residents
and not to do that without the
permission of Admiral Dewey. If,
however, there should bo any attempt
at forclblo Intervention, there is Just
one courso for tho United States to

dispatch to the Star, dated off San
tiago, July 6, says:
"After the destruction of tho -Span
ish fleet 400 men from the Mario
Theresa were placed as prisoners on
the Harvard. For 6ome reason these
men mutinied. The officers and crew
of tho Harvard were prepared, and
tho mutineers were fired upon. Six
Spaniards were killed outright and 12
wounded.
News Confirmed.
Washington, July 7. Secretary
Long has received word through Gen
eral Grccly, signal officer, which Is
accepted as confirming the report that
tho Spanish cruiser, Alfonso XII,
was destroyed while trying to run the
Havana blockade. General Grccly 's
Information came In a cipher message,
and ho considers it reliable. The
ship Is said to be a. total loss. The en
gagement occurcd near Muriel.
Sectctary Long regarded the report
as the best news of tho day. Eoth
tho secretary and General Grecly re
garded tho report as authentic,
but thero was a deslro to get
moro details, as this has some
thing of a spectral ship.
Tho Alfonso XII is an iron gunboat,
with one screw, one funnel and one
military mat, barque-rigged, 280 feet
long, 4 1 feet beam and 18 feet draught.
She has a displacement of 3000 tons.
She has a speed of 17 knots for short
distances and an average speed of 14
knots; carried clghc guns, five machine
guns and live torpedo tubes. Her of
ficers and crew numbered 370.
Pando Dead.
New Yobk, July 7. A dispatch
to the Ilcrald from Klngstemsays:
Another of tho Spanish leaders,
Gendral Pando, has fallen in battle,
but his troops, numbering 7000, hav
ing succeeded In getting into tho city
of Suutiugo. This Interesting news
is obtained from refuges who arrived
here from Santiago on tho British
warship Pallas, and tho American
warship Maria Tcresu,
According to these refugees, Pando
was serlonBlj wounded in the arm
whilo commanding his troops, in a
battlo at Palmu Soriano, at which
point General Garcia, with several
thousand Cubans, attompted to
prevent his further ndvanco toward
Santiago.
After the battle, General Pando's
men proceeded toward tho clty,rinally
entering with dlfllculty, Gen. Pando
was carried along with tho troops and
now Is being cared for on the dis
mantled crulsor Itolnc Mercedes,
which Is lying In Santiago harbor,
and Is used ns a hospital ship,

Coal far Camara.
New York, July 7. A dispatch
from Port Said says:
The St Augustln, with government
permlsolen, will transship to the
Spanish fleet which entered the canal
1200 tons of coal when four miles from
Suez. Before the squadron left here
1000 troops with supplies and ammu
nition were transferred from tho
Buenos Ayres to the Isla de Luzon,
thereby making the Buenos Ayres
available as a cruiser.
Expedition Landed.
Nkw York, July 7. A special to
the World, from Washington, says:
The Cuban legation has been ad
vised of tho safe arrival In Cuba of
the second expedition of Cuban volun
unlcers from the United States under
command of General Emllio Nunez,
The expedltlan left the coast of Flor
ida on the steamer, June 25, and
landed at Punta Caney on the 30th.
On board the transport, besides the
350 Cuban volunteers, chiefly from
Florida and New York, were two dy
namite guns, 4,000 Springfield rifles
and a large quantity of ammunition.
Raising the Wrecks.
Washington, July 7. The navy
department has closed a contract with
the Merrltt & Chapman Wrecking
Company to save all the property
possible from the destroyed Spanish
fleet.
Secretary Long Is qulto hopeful that
several of the Spanish ships of Cer.
yera's squadron can be sayed, in part
at least. The contract with the Mer
rltt Wrecking Company is by the day,
and may be cancelled at any time if
the government finds the salvage Is
not progressing satisfactorily. Two
largo wrecking vessels left Norfolk
today to begin work upon the Colon
VIzcaya and Oquendo.
Fight With Terror.
Cape Haytein, July 7. The an
nouncement is made here that a
dispatch from San Juan de Porto
Rice, carried to St. Thomas by a car
rier pigeon, asserted that United
States auxillery cruiser St. Louis had
an engagement with tho Spanish
torpedo destroyer Terror, and killed
the engineer and hve men.
Troops for Manila.
Two cars of troops bound for Manila
will pass through Salem this eyenlng,
The ladles of Sedgwick Emergency
corps and other ladles are requested to
bring lunches to theS. P. depot.
The delegation going that will pass
through Salem tonight consists of the
Portland Engineer company and num
bers 01 men in all. The company goes
to San Francisco in charge of Capt.
Geo. W. Freeman. Two tourist cars
are plovlded for the company. A
dozen recruits from La Grande passed
through on tho overland Wednesday
evening. There will also be a number
of volunteers from Pendleton on to
night's train Let everybody pre
pare a lunch or a bouquet of flowers
for tho recruits and be at tho depot
when the train arrives.

great many cherries to Eastern points.
Tho varlsty being shipped is the Black
Republican it being a better shipper

berry season tho Company shipped a
great quantity of that delicious fruit
into California, tho crop In that state
having been light by reason of the
long continued dry weather.
Tho cherry crop in tho Willamette
valley this year is enormous J. F.
Stalger, proprietor of the "Cottage"
reports having partially picked a tree
of tho Royal Anno variety, In all 245
pounds and he estimates fully as
many more on the tree. Tho tree Is
about fifteen years old but the yield
is remarkable.
