A Hio Guamo dlspatrh says: nThe American front has been ad- yanced beyond the first crossing of tho Rio Guamo about a mile and the tug lies three miles and a half from the Spanish intrenchments. General Lawton. General Chaffee and General Wheeler have thoroughly reconnoltered the Spanish position, and with the aid of the information furnished by the Cubans, have very good maps of the roads and ditches in the vicinity. Much Information has also been obtained from the Spanish pactficos, which have slipped out aud given themselves up In the hope of obtaining food, They report starva tion and distress in Santiago. Tlwy say tho Spanish troops are on short rations, and that all supplies are being held for their men. The sick in the hospitals, the pacificos say, are suffering from lack of food, and they also report that seventy-seven Span lards were killed and eighty-nine wounded as a result of the engage ment on Friday last, with Colonel Wood's and Colonel Young's com mands. The most startling Informa tion nhrninpd from the pacificos is that since the advance began, almost 20,000 Spanish soldiers have arrived at Santiago deCuba. This statement is made on tho authority of General Lawton, General Wheeler, who made a rccon noisance for a half mllo beyond the skirmish line, finding that he was unable to obtain tho desired ylew through tho luxuriant tropical foliage, dismounted and climed a tree, A major-general of the United States army, in the forks of a tree, survey ing the Spanish outposts through his field glasses, was as a spectacle that gave some Jdea of tho wonderful energy of the dashing ex-confederate cavairv leader.
