YEARS INSURANCE BUSINESS. Why do they Fail? The advocates of stxk companies claim that the failures of so many stock companies on tho Pacific coast has been duo to heavy losses and small capital. Perhaps few of tho public know the actual facts. Wo will give some figures below which will throw u little light on the sub ject. Theio figures are nil taken from tho United States official statistic, and cover the period from 18S0 to 1890 which Includes the year 18S9,ln which so many conflagrations occurred. During this period the receipts of tho Pacilic coast stock companies that arc now extinct were $31,030,010, while their losses wore $10,373,255, leaving the enormous sum of 818,262,- 701 for profits and expenses. At the close of 18S9 these companies had assets amounting to $9,187,001. From these actual facts It would seem that the real trouble was not due to heavy lossc3 or to a lack of capital, but that It was due to the stock-company system of lnsuranco that collects its premiums three and five years in advance for their officers to speculate with. Failuicsof stock companies on the Pacflc coast have not been more frequent than im other .parts of the United States. According to the United States Census, there were 535 stock companies doing business Jan uary 1, 1890, and during tho previous decado there were 173 such companies failed or retired, Onel peculiar feature .about these stock company failures. is that many of them show a very low loss ratio. MUTUAL FAILURES. A purely mutual company may dis solve by mutual conscut. but such an 0110 can hardly fail, and when one does quit business, it Is not with a vast sum of the people's money col lectcd In advance for premiums, us is always tho case when stock companies fall. According to the United States census, there were 1403 mutual com panies that were doing business Jan uary 1, 1890, and condqing their bus! ness to dwellings, etc., while during the previous decado thero were 101 such companies ceased business. Fifty-four of these retiring mutuals were small associations that confined their business to townships or coun ties. From these (figures it will be seen that nearly flyo times as many stock companies have failed In pro portion to their number as mutuals. OLD MUTUAL COMPANIES. The oldest insurance company In tho United States Is tho "Philadel phia Contrlbutionshlp for tho Insur ance of nouses From Loss by Fire." Benjamin Franklin was ono of Its or ganizers. It is a mutual company 147 years old, and is still doing a prosper ous business. Pennslyvanla has an other mutual that is 113 years old. The oldest mutuaj company In Maine Is 72 years old. . Maryland lias one 105 years old; Massachusetts lias oco 72 years old, and 12 that are over 70 years old" The oldest ono In New Hamp shire is 74 years old. Rhode Island has one 100 years old. New Jersy has ono 70 and another ono 70 years old. Vermont has one 72, and Virginia has one 73 and another 05. Pad Ho Pro gress, d & w Impure Blood in Spung. This Is the almost universal ex perience.
