One'Man Against War.
Is it possible that this, a Christian
nation, is now preparing to offer
another sacrifice of human life?
Less than forty years ago one
fourth of our best people the very
(lower of the nation laid down their
lives that all surviving them might
all he free.
'TIs true that their heroic deeds
will ever live In the memory of their
grateful countrymen.
But must we again offer a like
sacrifice and In a foreign land to
the cause of freedom ?
Ab, perish the thought 1 Christian
fathers look about you as did Abra
ham of old, for an entangled ram,
before placing your sons upon the
terrible altar of war.
Is such a course in accordance with
tho teachings of him who offered his
body once for all.
I think nof For we read In the
guide Ho left his followers, that, "he
that despises Moses' law died without
mercy under two or three witnesses."
"Of how much sorer punishment.
suppose ye, shall ho be thought worthy,
who hath trodden under foot the
Son of God, and hath counted the
blood or the covenant, wherewith he
was sanctified, an unholy thing."
"For wo know him that hath said,
vengeance belongeth uum me, I will
recompense satth the L01 1 "
"An J again, The Lord shall judge
his people."
"But call to remembrance tho for
mer days, In which ye endured a great
tight of nllllctlon."
"Partly whilst ye were made a gaz
Ingstock both by reproaches and af
fliction; and partly, whilst ye be
come companions of them that were
so used.
"For ye had compassion of me In
my bonds, and took joyfully tho spoil
ing of your goods, knowing In our
selves that ye have In Heaven a bet
ter and an enduring substance.
"Cast not away therefore your con
fidence which hath great recompense
of reward.
"For ye have need of patience that
after ye have done the will of God, ye
might receive tho promise."

YEARS INSURANCE BUSINESS.
Why do they Fail?
The advocates of stxk companies
claim that the failures of so many
stock companies on tho Pacific coast
has been duo to heavy losses and
small capital. Perhaps few of tho
public know the actual facts. Wo
will give some figures below which
will throw u little light on the sub
ject. Theio figures are nil taken from
tho United States official statistic,
and cover the period from 18S0 to 1890
which Includes the year 18S9,ln which
so many conflagrations occurred.
During this period the receipts of
tho Pacilic coast stock companies
that arc now extinct were $31,030,010,
while their losses wore $10,373,255,
leaving the enormous sum of 818,262,-
701 for profits and expenses. At the
close of 18S9 these companies had
assets amounting to $9,187,001.
From these actual facts It would
seem that the real trouble was not
due to heavy lossc3 or to a lack of
capital, but that It was due to the
stock-company system of lnsuranco
that collects its premiums three and
five years in advance for their officers
to speculate with.
Failuicsof stock companies on the
Pacflc coast have not been more
frequent than im other .parts of the
United States. According to the
United States Census, there were 535
stock companies doing business Jan
uary 1, 1890, and during tho previous
decado there were 173 such companies
failed or retired, Onel peculiar
feature .about these stock company
failures. is that many of them show a
very low loss ratio.
MUTUAL FAILURES.
A purely mutual company may dis
solve by mutual conscut. but such
an 0110 can hardly fail, and when one
does quit business, it Is not with a
vast sum of the people's money col
lectcd In advance for premiums, us is
always tho case when stock companies
fall. According to the United States
census, there were 1403 mutual com
panies that were doing business Jan
uary 1, 1890, and condqing their bus!
ness to dwellings, etc., while during
the previous decado thero were 101
such companies ceased business.
Fifty-four of these retiring mutuals
were small associations that confined
their business to townships or coun
ties. From these (figures it will be
seen that nearly flyo times as many
stock companies have failed In pro
portion to their number as mutuals.
OLD MUTUAL COMPANIES.
The oldest insurance company In
tho United States Is tho "Philadel
phia Contrlbutionshlp for tho Insur
ance of nouses From Loss by Fire."
Benjamin Franklin was ono of Its or
ganizers. It is a mutual company 147
years old, and is still doing a prosper
ous business. Pennslyvanla has an
other mutual that is 113 years old.
The oldest mutuaj company In Maine
Is 72 years old. . Maryland lias one 105
years old; Massachusetts lias oco 72
years old, and 12 that are over 70 years
old" The oldest ono In New Hamp
shire is 74 years old. Rhode Island
has one 100 years old. New Jersy has
ono 70 and another ono 70 years old.
Vermont has one 72, and Virginia has
