Under tho dale or Portland, Fcbru. ary 10, Mr. E. Kroner, secretary of the executive committee of the I'epplc's party, liasaddresbed the following let ter to Hon, Marlon Uutler: "The letter or Mr, J.C. YounK.state chairman, of the People's party Of Or egon, dated January 28, replying to your request for Information about Hie political situation In Oregon, has had quite a itcnorul circulation In the Journals or tills stule and particu larly In' the Republican papers. (;on blderliiK the olllclal position of the writer, you will agree that Mr. Youtu's Is somewhat remarkable, and the Tact of its ready publication In the old standard press isetcn more remarkable, as It Is doubtless bafe to assume thai this letter .vas not given out ror publication by yourself. The importance of this matter must servt us my excuse for coming before you with this somewhat lengthy commun ication. Mr. Young had occasion to publish his views upon what he made the subject matter of his letter to you In the morning Oregunlan of Jutiunr 21. nubllthed in Portland, ar.d thcie seemed no necessity aud certain! llttlu propriety of any further promul gallon or his rancorous sentiments In the gold standard press. Every thing that occurred to me ut the time as auswerlng his objection to u Union or the llc fonn elements is embodied in a lettei answering his, which appeared In the same paper on January 27, ana as the question Is really not germane to your inquiry, 1 dismiss It with this paving mention, being informed that the ubove papers Have been mailed to you. Owing to the great liupoitanei to you of correct Information I pre sent you here u synopsis of the si tun tlon In the state referring to Mr Young and his letter, when It unpen r necessary to qualify or contradict his statements. The Uryan and Watson votes shows as you are doubtless a wife no material decrease from the voting strength oi two parties, except in a few Instances, the most uotablc and the only Im portant one being Multnomah county (city of Portland,) outside of this county Bryan carried Oregon by over 3000. In Portland Mr. Young's In timate rrlend Jonathan Hourne, and n man who hud been elected to the Oregon legislature by a "fusion" ar ranged at the Instigation and under the direction of Mr. Young In June lb'JO, was In charge of the campaign. The mayor or Portland hud given him ontiie controll ur the police tie pa! t nient to prevent fraudulent voting but tho Cleveland olllcn holders comb -.ied with the selfstyled" respect able classes "formed u so called" law mid order league" and paraded the streets on election day with a pomp ous display of broadcljtli coats white ribbons and stove pipe hats, repeat ing adllbltuui. Mr. Young's Held marshal proved unable with tho en tire police force of Portland to pre vent tills, in fact lie never tackled these men at all, presumably on ac count of tholr boclal prominence. This, together with tho customary Intimidation of employes resulted in reducing tho Uryun votes about 400 and increasing the McKlnley yote about 4000 Thus it was that Mc Klnley carried Oregon. Hut this does not. show that any dissatisfaction existed In Oregon. It rather shows that tliu Populists supported Jlryan loyally and I think moio loy ully than the Democrats aud a careful scrutiny of tho vote by precincts sup ports that conclusion In a general way. 1 havo never found a slnglo ex pression of dissatisfaction In the niutiycomuiunlcat tons that constantly pour into our papers and surely tho dissatisfaction which Mr. Young speaks of could not have escaped the notice or ylgllant porennlcl corre spondent from tho country whonover a populist In that part of tho country tsillssatlslled you generally hear Troin him, Mr. Young's case, 1 think. Illus trates that buillclcutly. Mr. Young's declaration that tho Debs organization will not becomo active lu Oregon, unless a fusion Is had and that It then will aud .absorb at onco lGOOu population amounts to saying, that the Delslsts propose to it Just as Good as Scott's and we sell It much cheaper' is a statement sometimes made by the druggist when Scott's Emulsion Is called tor. This shows that the druggists themselves regard Emutmian of Cod-Liver Oil with Hypophos phites of Lime and Soda as the standard, and the purchaser who desires to procure the "standard" because he knows It has been of untold benefit, should not for one instant think of taking the risk of using some untried prepa ration. The substitution n( nmtUnn s.ifd to he. "just as jood" for a stand ard preparation twenty five years on the market, should not be permitted by the intelligent purchaser. llo turo you Rtt BCOTT'S EmuUlon. As chairman, Mr. Young cannot decently assist In I'lther, but whether he docs or not, no IC000 voters, I assure you will ever Join uny proposed exodus out of the i'coplc'8 parly In this state, nor will one-tenth that number, when they can vote a reform ticket representing the Icadlnir l'onullst doctrines. In the June election In 1890 a "mid dle of-the-road" ticket support by Uoxey who came to Oregon against the protest of Mr. Young, which had tho support and was conducted under the management of the extreme so cialistic members or the party In Mull nomah county secured from 48 to2o0 votes out of 11 total of about 17000, the People's party vote being approximately 5000, Democrats I&00. This shows that the more thoughtful and less clamorous socialists have been In the past and arc now willing to bide their time and adopt the desir able features of their doctrine through direct leu Nation (which all rcfoim turtles in tliu state favor) us soon us they nave succeeded In educating the public inlhil to the point where their adoption l feasible, and these will support a Union ticket. This declara tion of about 15000 socialls sin Oregon is the rankest bluster, showing how fatally Mr. Young's political percep tion N distorted by his idiosyncrasies. There Is no question whatever thut there will be an abundant majority in favor of a Union at our state conven tion and only an unreasonable stand taken by the other parties could pos slbly prevent it aud Mr. Young stands almost tilono. among the prominent Populists In the stale in the position which ho occupies. Notwithstanding the unnecessary accrldlty which Mr. Young employs against cyery one who dlllers with with him aud the liberal use of terms like pic-hunter (Mr. Young was one of the Hrst men who ever held oilllco "as u Populist In the state or Oregon) or party boss" we, of the common votejs of the Peoples' Party of Oregon who had the audacity to express an opinion upon this at variance witli his, have always treated Mr. Young with proper respect. We never address him without pre facing our remarks with expressions of contldcnco In his Integrity and com pliment for his Judgment and latterly we have followed him around holding out our ear of corn In one hand like a rancher after an obstreperous cayuso, but he Is still running loose in the barnyard. Hut to bo accused of being "bosses" by Mr. Young Is a Joke that no one away from Oregon can ap preciate. No man, certainly no Pop ulist, over enjoyed the untrammeled scope of autonomy or exercised and displayed the dazzling genius for un ceremonious execution of our state chairman. It ought never to be for gotten that the "mlddlo-of-tho-road" enjoy the festering care of the Gold Standard Republican, hi a noticeable degree. In Multnomah county the county Judgo has in every Instance Ignored, after requesting, tho recom mendation of People's party commit tee forjudges and clerks of election and lias appointed men who, though less competent, wcro known to bo ad vocates of a straight Populist ticket. Theso satno persons served tho Repub lican party two years ago by getting up or uilddlc-of-the-road Populist tlckolagalnst tho peoples ticket put up by our convention. Tholr cllortswero of no consequence. Let mo say at linisli that the people will havo nothing hut a united front against tho McKlnley Oago linan clal theories, that the sentiment In favor of this union is gaining strength dally. This, (Multnomah) county, will go for union 10 to 1 at tho convention, sumo counties have already declared, others will In the near future; everybody realizes that any otlier course would result in tho annihilation of the party in Oregon. Can wo wlnV I say that IT every pro lesscd reformer, everybody this sido of tho McKlnley plan of national happiness, will help, wo cannot lose. 1 have endeavored to give a fair ac count of tho conditions, based upon observation of our men slnco the organization of tho party in this state, conscious of tho Importance of correct Information. Some of them were actually surprised to find him without horns or In any respect re sembling a monstrosity. He Is a very pleasant gentleman Lo meet. His grasp of tlie ban J is as cordial as that of an any old farmer. He Is entirely free from affectation or a desire to court notoriety, by aping the solemn taciturnity too often worn as a mask of greatness, so common among many of our literary men and women of to day who adopt this and other means to put tho crape of genius on their sleeve, by affecting this or that par ticular style, which strikes them as "loud" enough In the way of display to make the people think them great. There Is none of the long-haired bloylntor about Mr. Scott. If you don't like the way he runs the Ore gonlan, you aro at liberty to tell him so and you run no risk of anything worse than perhaps an argument In which you will probably come out second best, A banker Is just what Is wanted on the school board. We have never given tho matter a thought, but can seo no reason why Bishop Turner's assertion should not be just aspotcart as the assertion of the white man that God Is a white man. No one knows what color God Is, and the only reason the American people has ror believing that God Is a white man with bluo eyes und straight hair is because a wiiue man says so.
