It brings up several matters about which there has been ti great deal of criticism: A I'ATIION WHITES: Editok Jeurnal: I have read with much Interest what you hayo said about the "financial" condition of our school district. But It seems to me there Is still more to bo said, und other Interests need looking after quite as much as the financial Inter-est. At present, politics and self lntcr est has quite too much to do with school matters. And when txilltlrs. self Interest or religion (by any sect) enters Into our common schools the best results ure not likely to be ob tained. Our school board should bo men who arc broad enough to rise above self-interest or party and work for tho best interest of our schools. They should be men who understand some thing about cducutlonal matters und know when a school Is properly con flicted, men who would select teach ers with reference to their ability to teach, and not on account of their po litical standing or religious anima tion. It should make no dflurcnen whether the hoard was "gold stand ard" or 'Tree silver" but men who will work for the advancement of the best Interest of our schools The greatest linanclal loss of a school dis trict Is not always t ho amount of In terest It nays, hut often the kind or teachers It employed, for tlii wages of an Incompetent teacher Is always a ilnanclal loss to the district and a hindrance to the proper education of thochildtcn.
