A Trip to tiie Qscniry. A trip in tbe country in almost any direction i a treat at this time. A twenty tnik ride north from Salem through .tbe prarrie regions and re-ta.-n troogh'Misision Bottom will re pay any one- for tbe trouble. The Ine growing crop of grain, hay and fruit Is immense. Hops every where, and tbey are in fine condition. A few b3ve plowed up their bops and planted other crops.but generally they h3ve not. A few new yards bave been planted. A visit to the grade now about two thirds finished, near Judge Hubbard's place, and a ride over the road which it is intended to accommodate would interest the tax payers. The ques tion of tbe end justifying the means j is certainly Involved In the building of that Immense grade, and yet it will be a hard piece of road. Among the objects worthy of at tention Is a peach orchard of about ten acres owned by T. B. Jones, who has a line farm on Mission Bottom of about four hundred and forty acres The early fruit is now ripe and is very much In evidence In ourcity markets. There will be at .least two thousand bushels of fruit In this orchard. M. L Jones Is building the second double hop kiln at his hop yards, making a drying capacity of about six hundred boxes per day. A visit to that part of the country would almost banish any though of the great deficiency. One remarkable feature is that Mr. Jones gets his fruit boxes from Ash land.
