y-ETOTr-iraps-' CONGRESSIONAL ' t Tariff Conferees in Session, Are in a More Hopeful Mood inations. Nonr Washington, July 10. The tariff conferees were In a more hopeful mood and one leading representative of the senate expressed the opinion that tho Republicans would be able tc conclude their labors and summon the Democratic members by Satur day. The day was spent in consider ing minor details of the bill, which have been passed over with an occa sional reference to the difference on sugar bchedulc. It Is believed the contending factions are very near an adjustment, which will compromise the dllTeienccs In tho sugar schedule. The senate tabled the motion or Stewart to reconsider Its action di recting the secretary of war to exe cute the San Tedro harbor project, and pasted the Thurston resolution, providing for participation or the United States In the Paris exposition. On motion or Tillman, the senate passed the bill to make distilled spir its transported from one state into another subject to the state laws, the bameas liquor distilled within the state. Stewart and white had va hot con troversy oyer the Sdn Pedro matter. The latter plainly intimating that Mr. Stewart represented the Southern Pacific railioad, and the latter resent ing it. NOMINATIONS. The president bent to the senate following nominations: Roland T. Rombauer, of Montana; Edwin S. Hathaway, of Montana, and William V. Thompklns, of Arkansas, to be commissioners to examine and classify lands within the land grant and Indemnity land grant limit of the Northern Pacific Railroad company in theMlssoula land dlstrlct.Montana. Joseph U. Ault, of Montana; A. R. Johnson, or Montana, and Wilson Iloyle, of the District or Columbia, to be commissioners to examine arid classiry lands within the land grant and indemnity land grant limits of the Northern Pacific Railroad com pany In the Kozetuan land district, Montana. Cyrus Leland, Jr., to be pension agent at Topeka, Kan., te be receiver of public moneys. William U. Immediately after the Jour nal was approved a recess was taken, on Cannon's motion, Cannon having glyen assurance to Bailey that, In his opinion, a partial or complete report of the deficiency bill would be ready by that time. In the Colorado Courts. Denver, July 10. A suit involv ing $30,000,000 Is in progress in the United States court here and today arguments were heard on a demurrer to the altered bill. The plalntlffsjare Leonard S. Ballou and Alexandria McLay, of New York. The defend ants are Clinton B. Reed, John F, Campion and others interested in the Ibex Mining Co., of Lcadville. The plaintiffs ask that an accounting be ordered, and name the famous sum of $30,000,000 as the amount due them. This makes the largest lawsuit on record. State of Ohio, City of Toledo, Lucas Countv. 'sj. Fiank f. Cheney makes oath that he is the senior partner of the firm of F. J. Cheney & Co., doing business in the City of Toledo. Of course a large number of claims are staked by pcoplo knowing nothing of their probable value and without suf ficient means to dcvclope and ascertain the same and sometimes for specula tion merely. These get the name of "wild cats." Development had brought to the front the following named claims of merit all within sight of the city. We haye two railroad here, tho narrow gauge Columbia cc western railroad Is to be standardized at once and it looked like direct connection was to bo made with as little delay as possible with the Canadian Pacific railroad y la Crow's Nest. Pass. One hundred miles of the latter Is contracted for to be built at once It Is currently understood. Religious denominations are well represented, thro being a Presbyter ian, Methodist, Catholic, Episcopal and English Episcopal church here. Wo have good schools and plenty of them, a good opera house, electric light plant, water works etc. Buildlug and city improvements have gone ahead of the development of new mines and it looks like they should have kept pace together. Capital discriminating, thus in its investment, has caused a lull to come; upon mining for the time beinc. Times have not been as good this spring and summer as was looked for last winter, but it Is hoped that last yoar's activity in mines win oe re sumed. Of course real estate has now taken on a sympathetic movement and not much additional building is being done. Laborers have been receiving gener ally $2.50 per day for city work, $3 until lately, It having been reduced to $2.50. Miners receive from $3 to $5. Biack&miths receive from $4 to $0. There Is no demand here at present for common laborers, or In fact for tradesmen, except skilled miners. More of the latter, however, are needed and needed badly. L. G. Barron. July 12. Chas. H. Yale's "The Twelve Tempta tions'." One of the most Important attrac tions offered here this season Is Chas. II. Yale's, "The Twelve Tempta tions," which Is to claim attention at the Reed, for one night only, June 21. This is reputed to be a great spectacle, having cost a large sum of money to put on the stage. It is en tirely new. colossalln every respect, while the splendid costumes afford a feast of harmonious color, blending and uniqueness of design. It is lit erally crowded with fun and pantomi mic tricks.
