A Prominent Salemlte Visits the Mines ' and fisheries. A iihh Strong returned yesterday from a two weeks' tour of .southwest ern Oregon. He went by steamer from Newport to Tort (Morel. Atthlspoliit cattle nnd sheep are it great success, steamer loads being shipped to San Francl.sc every week. There Is con siderable bench mining done at this point, where good wages ureinade dur ing the winter months. Considerable seal and other hunting Is also done at this point. From this point Mr.Strong went by steamer to the mouth ot the lloguc Hlver, visiting Gold Peach nnd Wcdderburn. At the latter place the H. I). Hume salmon cannery Is opera ted, at which about IfH) people are em ployed during season. The output Is about 40,000 cases per annum. This beach Is also worked by miners during the winter months, nt which men claim they make from $Tto$20 per day, but Mr. Strong thinks this Is a irillo high. The hills hereabouts ure covered witu tuc inmous Mima Cruz oak, which Is used for tanning. Much wood and bark are shipped from here, and bring in considerable money. Th'i bark brings $u per coid on the river batik. The timber Is also being shipped in squared logs for furniture and llulshliig lumber, to be used lu the San Francisco ninrkets. Mr. Strong went Into the Interior fnim this point, which is a wild un settled country. A coal mine has been discovered about thirty miles up the river from Wcdderburn, to which point small steamers and snlling scows can navigate. The coal Is about, the same quality as at Coos bay, nod is being shipped In small quantities. From here Air. Strong returned vln Newport.
