Smith, former supcilu tcndctit of the Oregon reform school, returned last evening from a visit In California. He hits been honored with tho position of principal of tho public schools at Grass Valley, with 22 teachers tinder him. This Is an honor of which Mr. Smith can well feel proud, and the people of Grass Valley will learn later on that they have made no mistake in their selection. X" RAYS. Estate Matters. Boise, Scott Wilcox and Charles Oglo have been appointed to apprise tho property of tho estate. In the matter of the cslato of Elton Coldren, deceased, Jennie Coldrcu, tho administratrix, having tiled her bond amounting to $1,000 with O. L. Col dren and G. D. Eugene was In darkness last night so far as street lights were concerned. Tho contract between the city and tho electric light company expired on the tonth of this month, and since that time tho council and company havo failed to agrco on terms for a new contract. Tho city claims that retrenchment must bo elfectcd and Is willing to take a less number of lights at nearly tho old prlco per light, but to this tho company demurs. It Is estimated thero will bo a dellcit In city revenues this year of at least 81500. Two saloons failed to take out license, a loss of $S00, and it Is thought tho loss from decreased valuations in assess ments will not amount to much less than $1000. Last year It was $1100. Guard. An Ohdku. An order from Judge Howltt was today served upon lie colver Anson and tho ollicers of tho Consolidated Hallway company for tho examination of tho company's books by M. L. Chamberlain and his attorneys. Mr. Layman was born February 13, 1833, in Shenandoah valley, A'irglnla, and when n boy moved with h's nar- ents to Illinois. In 1801, he married Matilda Thresher, who survive m,,, In 1878 ho moved with his family to Oregon and sottled on a farm near Woodburn, where ho lived at the tlmo of his death. Ho was very prominent In public affairs, having been threo times a member or the legislature In 1680, 1888 and 1802-and was tho author or tho bill known as the Lay man llquor-llccnso bill. In 1890 ho was appointed a delegate to the Farm ers' national congress at Omaha by Governor Pcnnover.
