1WKT..- mm 'i ft TK8 OAKKBRT WORKING. An Interesting Okat With Manager Wallace oa Fralti and Oannlntr. A short Interview with J. M. Wal lace, wlio baa charge of tbe Inre V ul . Jaca estate, nod la cotiBeiiueutly man ukIi' ttif Hatpin cannery bb well an the muiutuoutli Wallace pear orchards, convinces the writer that all the flat tering prophecies concerning the fruit crop are about to bo materialized, He reports the pear trees so baavily loaded with fruit that it has become neccssajy to tie up the llutbs of tbe trees with cord t' prevent tbe growing fruit from breaking them down. Tbe force of men has been engaged at this work for about u week. During tbe past year Mr. Wallace has been trying some experiments in tbe pear orchards which will prove a great bene lit to tbo estate as woll as other growers. He conceived the Idea that with more, thorough fertilization larger crops could be raised, and to this end bar placed many stands uf bees among tbe trees. This be believes to have been very beneficial iu carrying pollen from tree to tree and will increase the number of bees another season. He has also bad about 4,000 grafts of tbe Fox and Barry pears put onto the iliirtlett trees. These varieties all bloom about the same season, and the reuiilts of the experiment are looked forward to with great interest. Tho trees wero thoroughly b prayed, and are today as clean of pests, luscots, aud fungi as any trees can possibly b'. They are making a thrifty growth, as usual, aud this year the orohard has been treated to a crop of clover, which it Is believed will have a good eflect on the trees as well as the land. Mr. Wal lace hopes this year to ship about ten tur loads of the best pears that ever went Into an eastern market. The large apple and cherry orchards aro tlu doing well this year. At tbe big cannery everything Is in a flourishing condition. The goose bnrry crop has been completed. Straw beirles are about using wound up, and the cherry crop Is now coming in full blast. Mr. Wallace says he will this jor put up tbe finest Royal Ann cherries over canned anywhere. Al though tbey could be bought for Ices MJ'-noy, he is paying four coutsper pound for them, in order to get only the very beat. All that do not come up to bis high standard will be reected. lie Is applying tbe same process to all oilier articles canned this year, and rt' be proposed to raise the standard of Oregon canned fruits to the highest iu the laud. We bays tbe finest fruit that can be grown, and why not make uuuuie for tbe best In tho world? Oregon will In the near future be a heavy exporter of canned fruits as well as dried, and she should have the ben tit of excellence to which she is Justly eulltliil by tbe superior quality of her produce. Next week work will begin on peas, of which a large crop Is grow In jr, planted expressly for the cannery. Tbey look flue, and will make an extra choice canned vegetable, Oath a.
