It is somewhat surprising that Cbas, L. Webster & Co., New York, publish. era of standard llterature,sboBld publish as one of their Webster library such a work as "Elizabeth, Christian Sclen list," by Miss Matt Crlm, author of a "Fair Rebel." Ii is one of the first concessions of a great publisher to a teaching still unkno'wn to the multi tude, opposed by the orthodox and ac cepted by the few. The publishers an nounce that the true alms and spirit of Christian science arc set forth in a man ner calculated to do away with many false laipreftsluns. It Would be inter estlng to know to what extent so gifted a writer can throw her soul into these types without becoming a convert to the truths she depicts so convincingly toothers. If it be the truth to Miss Matt Crlm that she is dealing In, then it follows that the writer will not, give herself to any other literary work in fu ture, but become ft second Mrs. Eddy for tbis cause. Hamlin Garland writes on "Pacific Coast literature" in the San Francisco Call: "I saw children moving along to school in tho shadow of the most epleu dld peaks. More people need to learn this and should set this book. Worlhington'fl Illustrated Magazine for June, opens with a very interesting paper entitled, "Random Notes on Hawaiian Life," by C. T. Rogers, M. D., a prominent physician, now and for many years a resident of Honolulu. The June number is rich in well written leading articles of timely inter est, in short stories, essays and poems, while the charming illustrations, beau tlfuliy reproduced, nud the fine press work, render It as satisfactory to the eye as It Is refreshing and stimulating to the mind. It is. in fact, to our mind, the best number of a Magazine that has been exceptionally attractive and and interesting from the start, Along with other literary fads, a full fledged Mahommetan church paper has been established in New York. Chicago Special to the Oregenlan: Atnalle Hofer, managing editor of the Chicago Kindergarten Literature Co., a sister of the editor of the Salem Jour nal, called at the Oregon horticultural pavilion today qoil pronouueed it the best display of fruits at the fair. Alexauder Rusell Webb, who has recently returned from diplomatic ser service iu India, bos begun publication of "The Moslem World," 458 West 20tb street, New York. It Is a beauti ful paper, style of Harper's Weekly, aud devoted to a propaganda of the Mohammetun religion, to which its editor has become a convert. The catalogue of Stanford University Job! received has kindergarten work iu the educational course. No prepara tion for teaching is considered at all complete without a knowledge of the Froebel methods with children. THE WIZARD OF LETTKRS. Hawthorne was a Salem boy that older Salem in Massachusetts. Chance acquaintance with great men in his boyhood gave him the friendship after wards of a president Pierce, who sent him abroad aud that made a literary career possible. He occupied three public offices, guager, postmaster and consul to Liverpool. This withdrew him much from his chosen life task of letters. But it gave him a literary competence aside from the financial sense. How this all came about is re lated in an artistic volume of personal recollections by his classmate, Horatio Bridge, a retired paymaster geueral of the U. S. Navy. Harper & Brothers, New York. The stone fights of Corea. aro a remark able national sport, The kite fiyiug, which is universal in Corea, stops on tho 16th of their first month, and next day the stone fights take its place. The niost serious fights occur on tho large open spaces of the capital. There is a sort of recognized pitting of one section of the city against another, out there is no or ganization and no leaders, though the fighters generally follow tha lead of the more daring and'reckless of their num ber. Stones fly in an incessant shower, and each man tries to hit as many men as he can, and specially to avoid being hit by stones aimed at him. A few men on each side are armed with strong clubs and provided with wadded hemlets, and these como to the closer quarters re quired for blows, while the main body ply tho missiles. The excitement is in tense, and thousands of spectators crowd the neighboring safe points. The villages round the capital are in a constant state of warfare with each oth er during the season, and broken heads are plentiful. In fact, it was reported that in tho first fight of last year six men were killed a record which nearly equals ono of our own good football sea sons and a company of soldiers which was ordered out to stop it could hardly do so even with fixed bayonets.
