THE WIZARD OF LETTKRS.
Hawthorne was a Salem boy that
older Salem in Massachusetts. Chance
acquaintance with great men in his
boyhood gave him the friendship after
wards of a president Pierce, who sent
him abroad aud that made a literary
career possible. He occupied three
public offices, guager, postmaster and
consul to Liverpool. This withdrew
him much from his chosen life task of
letters. But it gave him a literary
competence aside from the financial
sense. How this all came about is re
lated in an artistic volume of personal
recollections by his classmate, Horatio
Bridge, a retired paymaster geueral of
the U. S. Navy. Harper & Brothers,

each side are armed with strong clubs

The villages round the capital are in a
constant state of warfare with each oth
er during the season, and broken heads

sons and a company of soldiers which
