Tho receiver of another road loaned this indefatigablo builder enoughld rails for .a milo of tracki In a distaut parf.of tho state was purchased an .engine which had been condemned six years boforo and Bent to the'phops to bo wrecked for scrap iron. Two old cars were picked up somewhor olso at n bargain, and that old engine, drawing those old cars, steamed into-San Antonio. On engine and cars in bold lettering was painted in lampblack, "S. A. and A. P." With ono milo of old rail track andywith the equipment of tho old engine nnd tho two old cars Uriah Lott started the Aransas Pass sys tem. Thero has been some tall finan ciering in tho history of railroad building in this country, but there isn't anything which for dazzling pluck quito approaches tho story of the building of this GOO miles of road in south Texas. To the one mile of track there were added three miles by a dicker for some secondhand rails which a streetcar company had bought from a narrow gauge com pany. On this basis a credit trade was made with a Pennsylvania roll ing mill for 10 miles of rails. When they arrived, there wasn't money enough in the treasury to pay tho freight, but it was got somehow. Ten miles of track gave tho founda tion for bonds which built 40 miles more, and so the system grow into its present proportions. This man who built tho Aransas Pass system rodo from San Antonio to Chicago at one critical period in his enterprise without a cent in his pocket. He had transportation, but ho hadn't any thing to buy food, and he went right through hungry. St. Louis Globe Democrat. The Stooping llnbit. One of the greatest and most com- f mon deformities of tho day that aro laid bare by the prevailing styles of men and women's attire is one that, with a little care and attention, can bo remedied. It is tho round shoul deied or stooping habit. I say habit because, as a rule, it results from habit. Look through this car. Even the best natural figures show this tendency to stoop, while in the nar row chested it is marked to a painful degree. And yet, by raising one's self leisurely upon the toes in a per pendicular position several times a day, this deformity could be easily rectified. To do this properly one must bo in a perfectly upright posi tion, the arms dropping at the sido, tho heels well together and the toes forming an angle of 45 degrees. New York Mail and Express. The Oldest Tree on Earth, The oldest troe on earth, at least as far as any ono knows, is the Boo tree in the sacred city of Amarapoora, Burmah. It was planted, the records say, in the year 288 B. C, and is therefore 2,200 years old. Its great ago is proved by historic documents, says Sir James Emerson, who adds, "To it kings have dedicated their kingdoms in testimony of a belief that it is a branch of tho identical fig tree under which Buddha reclined at Uoa when he was undergoing his apotheosis." Its leaves aro carried away by pilgrims as relics, but as it is too sacred to bo touched, even with a knife, they can only be gathered after they have fallen. Now York Commercial Advertiser. Thero ronlly seems to bn no end to tho queer things which nro tlono by tho women of other countries to make tbtir faces conform to their own ideas of female beauty. Tho women and children of Guzurat stain their teeth black, whilo tho ladies of India nnd Japan gild their teeth and mako them ns brilliant as possible. But it remains for tho Chinese to do something which we in our country would consider very bar barous and cruel indeed. Tho Chineso do not admiro small eyes, and to reach their standard of beauty a girl's eyes must bo not only very large, but very long and brilliant. Tho oyes are easily made brilliant by putting cer tain drugs in them, but to mako them long when naturo has not intended them to be so is quite another matter. To ac complish it tho women have often re course to a kind of homo surgery which must bo very painful. A Chinese mothor who has a child affected with small eyes takes tho child at tho age of 10 or 13 and slits tho eyelid at tho corner, just where it joins the lower lid. A very small slit is made, and this is then left to heal. As soon as it is healed it is slit again, and this process is continued until tho eyes appear very long and prominent. Ex change. Detective Work as a Profession. Tho growth of tho dotoctivo profession has been brought home to us by a recent publication in an evening contemporary. A private detective office in London was reported to have sent out an extraordi nary number of detectives as they doubtless prefer to bo called for em ployment at tho Chicago exhibition, and our contemporary had interviewed tho chief of tho office upon the subject. The number of detectives nctually likely to bo employed on this occasion proved to be very much smaller than was at first reported, but for all that they wero suffi ciently numerous to prove a fairly large demand for their services. In other respects, however, tho account that this gentleman gavo of his business was of interest, though tho interest was not always of a pleasant kind. Ho sug gested that a use for his men would be found by financiers and business men, who might require secret agents "work ing in business transactions finding out market secrets, inventions, watching what speculators aro doing and that sort of thing," and ho assured his hearers that "that sort of thing is becoming much more general in England." We are sorry to hear It for tho credit of English commerce. Most of them, he admitted, would do "private work so cial matters needing investigation and things of that sort." "That sort of thing," and "things of that sort" are somewhat indefinite expressions; never theless, under tho circumstances, they are quite definite enough. Our imagina tion is equal to tho tatk of filling in tho blank, though it ib hardly equal to our distaste for the blank when filled in. London Spectator. A Poor Man and Ills Dog. "I was just watching a negro that passed by hero a few minutes ago with a dog tied to a string," said Christian Banks to a reporter at the Lindell. "If there is anything that is really humor ous, it is to seo a negro affectionately leading a dog that hasn't any affection for him at all, and doesn't want to have, either. The garb was, as usual, indica tive of the fact that the negro had little else to do except to take caro of the dog. His hands were almost hidden by the length of his coat sleeves, and tho coat itself hung in rich, heavy folds over tho shoulders and back in a manner more comfortable than graceful. Tho pants looked liko segmented cloth rings, piled one on top of the other from tho ground up. They must have been warm. "And thero was that poor unpedigreed purp slouching along after in an hum ble, respectful way that was, however, only measured by the length of tho string and the strength and toughness of it. Occasional jerks on tho cord that pulled the dog's nock skin nearly over its head, and a como along, now; doan' you go foolin wif me,' indicated to tho obedient animal that it was expedient to move along in this world. I just won der now what a poor negro wants with a lean, lank dog. It's tho old proverb over and over again, 'Misery loves com pany.' " St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Ten Pence For a beat In Parliament. Candidates for parliamentary honors who liave groaned under the heavy bur den of election expenses will regard with envy tho cheap means by which Mr. Dav itt secured his seat for Cork. All tho money that Mr. Davitt expended was 10 pence, the cost of a telegram acknowledg ing tho official intimation of his return. Of coarse it must bo remembered that Mr. Davitt's election was unopposed, but not every member who enjoys a walkover can boast that his seat cost him less than a shilling. Ten pence is bc-lioved to be the lowest sum recorded, and it might have been reduced to a penny if Mr. Davitt had been content to use the post instead of the telegraph wire. London Tit-Bits. A French woman recently wroto to a Paris litteratour asking for a remedy for tho "ono-day-like-anotber complaint." "I live," she 6ays, "in a dull provincial town, where there is not a woman who can read or talk; if I read, I have no one to discuss tho book with, and I have ar rived at tho desperate point of despair whero I would like to bito somo one." The litterateur, according to the ac count, did not much help her, as he merely, in reply, admitted tho fact in a quotation from Do Musset, which was in effect that there is no more common trouble in lif o than tho trouble of a com mon soul. Perhaps the only echo of tho French woman's wail could bo found over here in the suburban towns of a largo city. The smallest detached villages and towns of America seem to have occu pation and excitement of ono eort or an other that mako life endurable. Those, however, which are merely tho overflow of a metropolitan center are often tho loneliest places on earth. "I have almost died with the monotonv of my life," said a woman living in a' small Jersey suburb recently, "until now. when 1 can get into .New York oftener, because, my children aro out of tho nursery. Thero is absolutely no neighborhood life, everybody looking to town for social recreation; there is only a half hearted interest in church affairs; it is as different from an independent village as possible." New York Times. Education In the West. Eastern states might well take a les son from tho west in tho matter of high er education. With the exception of Massachusetts and Connecticut our com munities on the Atlantic border are sad ly doficient in this respect.
