I would nl most wagor everything I possess on tho proposition that without prepara tion they would tell you that tho only way to avoid tho Horn is by go ing through tho Straits of Magellan. "Now I am not teaching geogra phy, but every sailor knows of the Straits of Lo Maire, but how many presumably well informed people in San Francisco, or in London for that matter, know that thero is another short cut through tho South Ameri can continent? "Tho Merionethshire did not como through tho Stiaitsof Le Maire when.: sho made her ninety -six days pas sage, but sailing ships have passed through those straits, and if all tho conditions were favorable tho trip might bb thus shortened nearly seven days, so that theoretically a modern sailing ship might reach this port in eighty days or even less. But sail ing ships very rarely indeed come through these straits. Timo is not so much an object as it was in the days of the fifties, and in addition tho vessel that undertook it would forfeit her insurance. No insured .(ailing vessol over comes through the Straits of Lo Maire. I have sailed through those straits once, and would Dot caro to do it again. "Tlio Straits of Magellan and tho Straits of Lo Mairo represent two al ternatives as against rounding tho Horn. Neither of them is at any timo besot or blocked by ice. The ico floes trdvel from west to east around tho Horn, many degrees to .tho south of tho Straits of Lo Maire, which Ho between the southern end of Terra del Fuego and Staten island. By going through tho Straits of Lo Mairo a ship can savo 1,000 miles, but you will readily understand that, as the northern summer is tho ant arctic winter, uo vessol would evor attempt tho passage in June, July or August. "Tho Magellan passage is only pos sible for steamboats anyhow. Tho reason is that a sailing vessel must find an anchorage on the way through, and thero aro fivo of these anchorages. But uono of these can be mado, becauso tho current is very strong, especially at full moon, and becauso thero is no wind. On tho averago tho Magellan straits aro not more than four miles wide in tho thirty miles of their length, and often tho width is only ono milo. "Tlio Straita of Lo Mairo are fivo dogrees farther south. They aro about thirty miles through and as many miles across, but tho trouble is that when you get to the Pacific side thero is a current dead against you and northwest galea setting you dead on n rockbonnd coast "Just tako up a good map of tho soutlmf South America and have a talk with an old seaman," said Mato ik . th0 TOPrier b.?i. ii w apart or tuo "world tnat is going to become interesting very soon, and the events of the last two years aro going to lead up to others that may make a knowledge of tho crosscuts ef tho southern con tinent very interesting to statesmen boforo very long.-San Francisco NfiWTON TANNER.
