MBS. LKABE'S INELtGlMLlTV. They are raising the question of tho constitution in Kansas, as to Mrs. Lease being eligible for tho of llce of seuator. Thore are graver reasons than that why she would uover do for Unilld titates senator. 8bo could not cross her feet on top of a desk arid spit tobacco in the aisles. Bho would not drink whisky In the cloak rooms. She would not favor keeping in idleness a swarm of pretty committee clerks and type writers at publlo expense Bho could not and would not, as wom anly modesty forbids, attend Del rnouico drunks and opening of club houses for poker playing. Mrs. Lease would not make a modern popular senator. Besides many other constitutional objections, she would be apt to vote her convictions of right and wrong without regard to the party whip and she would talk sense once In awhile. oun ROOSTER, Tuero came to the Journal editor a few days after eleotion a most woe-begone starved-appearlng rooster. Ho could hardly crawl. Ills head was all battered up, worse a great deal than John L. Sul'iyau's after Corbett had got through with him. Ho could only walk on ono foot. Tho other was drawn up with rheumatism undet whero he onco stowed fond away, so long ago ho had no recollection. He was so weak he had to sit on tho ground to eat. Ho was an old bird, once of a proud breed, but now his tail-feathers were all gouo but a few broken stubs. Ono of his wings dragged on tho ground and ho had one eyo closed. His comb was dropping oir and hla ouce gay colors wore all faded out. After ho had filled him self up with provender for about three days bo crawled out into the suusblneand from the depth of a broken voice uttered ono feeble crow. Ho is a done-up bird. We begin to suspect some Democrat dropped him at our house as a cam paign joke. BICOIUCTOF U15SIOCJIIAT10 HUOOKSS. There Is a party la Germany knowu as tbo Social Democrats. Ttiero la a largo uumbor of Social Democrats all over this country just at present East Oregoulan, Dem. Does not tho abovo throw light on the rocont sweeping vlotorv of the Democratic party? Heretofore tbe Socialist vote has been given to the Labor ticket. This year tho Labor party had no ticket lu the field. Tbe Socialist and Anarchist ele ment In tho largo cities would not voto tho Prohl, nor tbo People's purty tickets. They mado war on the saloons nud favorea woman suflerage. So this largo "Social Democrat" voto, as tbo East Ore gouiuu calls It, went to Cleveland. Is not this tho secret of hla carrying New York and Illinois? In states without largo cities like Iowa aud Oregon tho Democratic party mado no gain. It fell behind. IIBCHK3 VttKY. HILVKH. Senator Jones, ono of tho American delegates to tho International mone tary conference, lu n Loudon Inter view, said: "Whether a freo coinage bill Is In troduced by tho Democrats, and whether It passes or not, arc differ ent matters, Mr. Cleveland himself is against freo coinage. It is Just the question bow far Democrats will lulliicuco his personality. A great masn of tbo people are bont on Una coinage. Why should free colnago tend to depreciate sliver currency? Wo hear from Indian otllclala much about tbo depression of silver in India, but tho Indian receives as much in commodities for a rupee as bo over did. It Is not silver that de preciates, It Is gold that appreciates. Wo hear about great stacks of silver, Whero are they? Whon you talk of grain or petroleum you can sub stantiate your statements. I want the sumo done In tbo talk of silver." CONVICT I,KASKtf, Oregenlan: Convict labor and what to do with It is a perplexlug question In other states, us well as in Oregon, Hera we have commit ted an unpardonable fault In our past solution of tho problem, No crime against humanity eau be charged up to the account of Oregon, suoh an tbe statsjof Georgia, Mkw4lppl, Teuneasee, LouWam and few otueni aiwt answer for. We bavo nwdeau Industrial; aud wohowIu error, aud jwblle sentiment dv maud tbat tke error be roilA!, owr yiatlm kif bow to doae Highest of all in Leavening Power. Latest U. S Gov't Repett H km Ar & ABSOLUTELY PURE with tho least burden upon tho tax payers. In tho Southern states, to Industrial error has been added lu- humanity nud barbarity. Tho convict-lease system, as It exists lu those states, Is an outrage upon the civilization of tho age, a return to tbo brutality and barbarity of me dieval times. There existed before tbo civil war no slavery worse than that of the present day In tho con vict gangs of the South. A slave was a valuable piece of property, and brutality was always tempered with a reward for the welfare of tho property. Tho health of tho slave was looked after. The conylot lessee, the task-master of tho unfor tunate victim of his own Ignorance, Inherited instincts and race preju dice, Is restrained by no suoh con slderation. All be cares for is to get as mnch work at as littlo expenso as possible out of tbo human maohlno ho rents from tbo state, and when tbe maohlne becomes unserviceable he sends it back and procures anoth er. This lease system bas cried aloud to heaven for years, but lu valu. The finer sentiments of tho South were dulled by slavery, aud bavo not yet received a now edge. This was shown in Tennessee a year ago, when tho governor called the legis lature together in special session to abolish tbo lease system, and It ad journed without taking action, a crime for which tho state has slnco paid in blood and treasure. In Georgia a eeutlmont against tho leasing of convicts to contractors Is gaining ground, aud the matter will bo presented to tho legislature. There, as hero, tbo most popular oc cupation suggested for the convicts is work upon tbe publlo roads. Tbo legislation proposed embraces thu cessation of the lease system as fast as the present contracts expire, tbo creation of a stato engineer's depart ment, which shall bavo chargo of tho work ofsurvey lug and construct ing roads, and the employment of convicts on the latter work, Other Southern states show a dogreo of Inertia and indiflerenco on this sub ject that Is appallng, in view of tbe essential Inhumanity of tho leaso system In its practical operation in tho South. Oregon lias no sin against humanity to rououuee, but sho has an cconomlo problem to solve, tho realization of as much value as possible- from tbo labor of tho convicts sho must support, without brluglng thorn Into compe tition with free labor. Tbo solution must bo roads. A Beautiful Foem. Tho following verses are tho latest from tbo pen of Will J Visscber of Tacoma a well known Journalist and grand army man: Sleep, ab sleep, yo brave, und listen, In your dreams to battlo's hum; Seo tbo foemau's armor glisten: Hear tbe bugle-noto and drum. Heads that rest on uusluug knap sacks, 'Neath your blankols and tbo night, Clow besldo tbo bristling gunstaoks, Dream of morrow aud tbo light. American Cholera. From tho Dally Ilovellle, What com, Washingten: "T. C, Burnott, tbe Democratic candidate for sberlfl was taken violently IllatClearbrook. Ho had all tho symptoms of Asiatic cholera, and lor an hour or two It was feared ho would die, They finally gave liliu a dose of Chamber lain's Collo, Cholera and Dlarhum Remedy, whtob revived him until a physician arrived," Tbat is pre cisely what the manufacturers of tbat medloiue recommend for chol era.
