denunciatory things that are t-aid in our
day in regard to it. If onorockholder
become a cheat, does that I'-Htroy tho
wholo company? If ono soldier bo a
coward, does that comdemn tho whole
army? And yet thero aro 1 1 my in this
day bo unphilosophic, so illogical, so
dishonest njd so unfair as to denounce
tho entire church of God because there
aro hero and thero bad meu belonging
to it.
Thore aro those who say that tho
church of God is not up to tho spirit of
the day in which wo live; but I have to
tell you that, notwithstanding all tho
swift wheels and tho flying thnttlcs and
tho lightning communications, the world
haB never yet been ablo to keep up with
tho church, Aa high as God is aboYO
man, bo high is tho phurelt of Gpd
higher than all human institutions.
From'her lamp tho best discoveries of
the world havo been lighted. Tho best
of our invontors havo bclioved in tho
Christian religion tho Pultons, tho
Worses, tho Whitnoys, the Perrys and.
tho Livingstones. Sho ln:u owned tho
best of tho teloscopes and Leydon jars,
and whilo infidelity and atheism havo
gono blindfoldod among tho most star
tling discoveries that wero about to bo

chandise has become honest merchan

freo governments, and all nations evan
gelized nations, and tho last deaf ear of

nezzar tried to burn in tho furnace, and
Darius to tear to pieces with tho lions, and
Lord Clavorhouso to cut with tho sword,
has gono on, wading tho floods and on
dnring tho flro, until tho deepest barbar
ism, and tho florccat cruelties, and tho
blackest superstitions havo been com
pelled to look to tho cast, crying, "Who
Is she that lookoth forth as tho morning,
fair as tho moon, clear as tho sun ami
terriblo as an army with banners?"

Yet there nro poople who aro ashamed
to bolong to tho church of Christ, and
if you ask them whothor thoy are in
such associations thoy say, "Yes, I some
times attend tho church," instead of re
alizing tho fact that thero is no honor
compared with tho honor of being n
member of tho church of God. I look
back with joy to tho most honored mo
ment of my lifo, when in tho ojd coun
try mooting Iioubo tho minister of Christ
announced my name as a follower of
tho Lord.
You who aro floating about in tho
world, seeking for bottor associations,
why do you not join yourself to somo of
tho churches? An old sea captain was
riding in tho cars toward Philadelphia,

tions and for satisfactions for tho Im

propose to apeak of tho threefold glory
of tho church us it is described in tho
text:
First "Fair as tho moon." God, who.
has dotermined that everything Khali bo

instruments that fill heaven and earth

praise, whilo tho stars listen and tho

watched a sick cradlo than this palo

heartsick, slumbering earth, Ringing to
it a silvery music, whilo it is rocked in
the cradlo of tho spheres.
'FAJIt AS TUB MOON."
Now, says my text, "Who is she, fair
as the moon?" Our answer is the church.
Liko tho moon, she is a borrowed light.
Sho gathers np tho glory of a Saviour's
sufferings, a Saviour's death, a Saviour's
resurrection, a Saviour's ascension, and
pours that light on palace and dungeon,
on squalid heathenism and elaborate
skepticism, on widow's tears and mar
tyr's robo of flame, on weeping peni
tence and loud mouthed scorn.
She is tho only institution today that
gives any light to our world, Into her

bereaved come and seo tho bottle in
which God saves all our tears, and the
captives come, and on tho Bharp comers
of her altars dash off their chains, and
tho thirsty comoand put their cup under
tho "Rock of Ages," which pours forth
from its smitten sido living water, spark
ling water, crystalline water from under
tho throne of God and tho Lamb.
Blessed tho bell that calls her worship
ers to prayer. Blessed tho water in
which her members aro baptized. Bless
ed tho wino that glows in hor sacra
mental cups. Blessed tho songs on which
hor dovotions travel up and tho angels
of God travel down.
As tho moon goes through tho midst
of tho roaring storm clouds unflushed.
and unharmed, and comes out calm and
beautiful on tho other tide, so tho
church of God has gono through all
tho storms of this world's persecution
and como out uninjured, no worse for
tho fact that Ilobespierre cursed it,
and Voltaire caricatured it, and Tom
Paino sneered at it, and flU the forces
of darkness havo bombarded it. Not
liko somo baleful comot shooting across
the sky, scattering torror r.ud dismay
among tho nations, but above tho long
howling night of tho world's wretched
ness tho Christian church hai made her
mild way, "Fair aa tho moon,"

bird's beak pounding tho bark, tho chat
ter of tho squirrel on tho rail, tho call of
a hawk out of a clear sky makes you
thaukfnl for tho sunshine which makes
all tho world so busy and to glad. The
samo sun which in tho morning kindled
conflagrations among tho castles of
cloud scoops down to paint tho lily
whito and tho buttercup yellow and tho
forgetmenot bluo.
WHAT CAN UESIST THE SUN?
What can resist tho sun? Light for
voyagor on tho deep, light for shepherds
guarding tho flocks nileld, light for tho
poor who havo no lamps to burn, light
for tho downcast and tho weary, light
for aching eyes and burning brain and
consuming captivo, light for tho smooth
blow of childhood and tho dim vision of
tho octogenarian, light for queen's
coronet and sowing girl's needle. "Let
there bo light."
Now, Bays my toxt, "Who is sho that
looketh forth clear as tho buh?" Our nn

ing along a road boforo daybreak, and
on ono sido you thought you paw a lion,
and on the othor side yon thought you
paw a goblin of tho darkuess, but when
tho sun camo out you found these wero
harmless apparitions. And it is tho
great mission of tho church of Jesus
Christ to como forth "clear aa tho sun,"
to illumiuo all early darkness, to ex
plain, as far as possible, all mystory, and
to mako tho world radiant in its bright
ness; and that which you thought was
an aroused lion is found out to bo a
slumbering lamb; and tho sepulchral
gates of your dead turn out to bo tho
opening gates of heaven; and that which
you supposed was a flaming sword to
keep you, out of paradise is an angel of
light to beckon you in.
Tho lamps on her altars will cast their
glow on your darkest pathway and cheer
you until, far beyond tho need of lan
tern or lighthouso, you aro safely an
chored within tho veil. Oh, sun of the
church, shino on until thero is no Bor
row to Bootho, no tears to wipo away
no shackles to break, no moro souls to
bo redeemed! Ten thousand hands of
sin havo attempted to extinguish the
lamps on her altars, but they aro quench
less, and to silenco hor pulpits, but tho
thunder would leap and tho lightning
would llamo.
Tho church of God will yet como to
full meridian, and in that day all tho
mountains of tho world will bo Bacred
mountains, touched with tho glory of
Calvary, and all streams will flow by
tho mount of God like cool Siloam, and
all lakes bo radiant with Gospel memorieH

sea bo crowned with apocalyptic vision
liko Patmos, and all cities bo sacred aa
Jerusalem, and all gardotis luxuriant as
paradise, with God walking in tho cool
of tho day, Then tho chorals of grace

Then tho throno of Christ will overtop
all earthly authority. Then tho crowu
of Jesus will outllamo all other coronets.

Yon know there is tiotling that ex
cites a soldier's enthusiasm so much as
an old flag. Many a man almost dead, '
catching a gllmp'o of tho national en
sign, has sprung to bin feet and started
again into tho battle, Npw, my friends,
I don't want you to think of the church
of Jesus Christ as a defeated institu-i
tion, as tho victim, of iniidcl sarcasm
some, hing to bo kicked and cuffed and
trampled on through all tho age of tho
world. It is "an army with banners." 1
It has nn inscription and colors s.ich a
never stirred tho hearts of an car' ly
soldiery.
Wo havo our b.tiincr of recruit, and 1
on it is inscribed, "Who is on the Lord's
side?" Our banner of defiance, and on
it is inscribed, "Tho gates of hell shall
not prerai' against us." Our banner of
triumph, and on It is inscribed, "Vic
tory through our Lord Jesus Christ!"
and wo mean to plant that banner on
every mitiop ami wave it at tno gate 01
heaven.
With ChrfJt to lead us wo need not
fear. I will not underrate tho enemy.
They aro a tremendous host. Thoy como
on with acntest strategy. Their weapons
by all the inhabitants of darkness have
been forged in furnaces of everlasting
fire. Wo contend not with flesh and
blobd.but with prinoipalitiesand powers I
and spiritual wickedncfu in high places; I
but if God bo for us who can bo against I
us? Como on, ye troops of tho Lord!
Fall into lino! Closo up tho ranks! On,
through burning sands nod over frozen
mountain tops, until tlio wholo o.irtb
surrenders to God! Ho madoit; ho re
deemed it; ho shall havo it. Thoy shall

With Christ to lead us, mid heaven to
look down upon us; and angels to guard

thrones, and the voico of God to bid us

army with banners into two wings the
American wing and the Emopean wing.
Tho American wing will :i arch on across
tho wilds of tho west, o-er tho table
lands, and come to tho ocean, no more
stopped by tho Pacific than the Israelites
wero stopped by the Red sea, marching
on until the remaining vails of China
will fall boforo this army with banners,
and cold Sibei-ia will bo turned to the
warm heart of Christ, and over lofty
Himalayan peaks shall go this army
with bauneis until it halts at Palestine.
The European wing will march out Id
meot it, and Spanish suporutition shall
bo overcome, and French infidelity shall
bo conquered, and over tho Alps, with
more than Hannibal's courage, shall
march that army with banners, and up
through tho snows of Uur.sia, vaster in
multitudo than tho hosts that followed
Napoleon into tho conflict. And Hun
gary and Poland, by tho blood of their
patriots and by tho blood of Christ,
shall at last be free. And crossing into
Asia tho law shall again be proclaimed
on Sinai, and Christ in tho person of his
ministers will again preach on Olivet
and pray in Gethsemano and exhibit
his lovo on Calvary. And then tho
army will halt in front of tho other
wing, tho twain having conquered all
tho earth for God.

All tho walls of that celestial mausion

torious battle and adorned with tho
