Tho Motor railway company is busy laying its track up State street, This Hack is being put on grade, as ordered by the council, which will bring it about two fuel 'above the present street surface ut the lower end and ubuut two feet below the surface ut the upper end of the street. The capital city's new track just laid on this street is also on actual grade, and the one track being on the.horth side of the street with the other in the centre, practi cally annihilates over half of this important street for travel with vehicles. The street was poor enough when wagons could pick the best parts of it to travel on, but now It is in horrible condition to say the least, und something should bo done to put It into shape. The business interests and the good'name of our city demand that Stute street be made passable. o For Safe Keeping. Deputy Sheriff Geo. F. Croner came down from Eugene Saturday with Slgel Jones, whom he placed In the county jail here for safe keeping until the October term of court in lane county, as the county jail at Eugene has been torn dowu preparatory to buildlug a new one. Jones and an old man CO years of age, named Geo. Earrout, were wrangling in a saloon on the evening of the 4th and when they were ejected Jones struck E.ir rout a severe blow over the head with a rock tied in a handkerchief. Jones will bo held to answer a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Bash Ball. A mutch game was played yesterday afternoon at tho grounds in this city between the St. Paul and Oregon City nines. A good attendance greeted the players and much interest was developed in the game. The score stood 9 to 10 in favor of Oregon City at the close, St. rani's making C tallies in the lust inning. Salem boys made most ot the runs on tho St. Paul side, and now a match between a picked nine of Salem players and tho Oregon City nine is talked of. Jay C. Smith acted as umpire. New Citizens. Saturday Emil Koppo took out his final citizenship papers. He was formerly a subject of the emperor of Germany. John Aust Satuiday declared his declar ation of intention to become a cit izen of the United States. He was a former subject of England. Fok Hek Brother. Writing from Fremont, Wash., to the county clerk, Mrs, Lucy A. Wick seeks in formation relative to a loug lost brother-in-law who came to Oregon In 1851. Tho relative is, James Mad ison Wick. John Irwin has commenced work with a full force of men raising and improving the upper story of the Minto building, now occupied by Cbas, Smith. It will be used for Y. M. C. A. purposes. The A. O. U. Street Com missioner Culver Is busy today with a force of men raising the Hie cistern at the intersection of Stnte and Liberty streets. This is being done to make it passable for the street car tracks, which are now being raised to the present grade at that point. Ho will also take out the old three-quarter inch supply pipe and insert a three inch main to supply that reservoir with water in tho future, which will udd not a little to the effectiveness of tho city's fire service. The Leonard aud Allen roads were ordered established, when all expenses shall have been paid. The Miller road petition was not granted. Much announce is frequently occa sioned hy persons getting keys for tho purposo of viewing unoccupied houses and failing U roturn them. In this con nection I may mention an Incident that happoncd a year or two ago. A well dressed gentleman called at ouroffico for tho koy of a houso to look over it. Ilo neglected to return tho key, howover, and tho house was subsequently let to anothor party. About twelve months nftorward, whilo repairing a drain, tho floor of ono of the rooms had to bo removed, when a quantity of watches, rings and other jowolery was found concealed under tho joists. Theso were proved to bo tho pro ceeds of a burglary at a jewolor's prem ises. Tho man who had got tho key of tho houso was known to tho polico as a notorious burglar, and at tho time had been suspected of tho robbery, hut wo3 allowed to escapo from want of sufficient evidence to convict him. As ho wa3 kept shadowed by tho polico ho had con sidered it impolitic to attempt to remove tho stolen property. Shortly after this ho was arrested In tho nqrth of England for a similar of fense and was sentenced to five years' ponal servitude. His sentence has not yet expired, and he probably remains In ignoranco of tho fresh ohargo that will await him on his release. Loudon Tit Bits. Sotting Typo with Moth Hnmls. Having got so far, tho foroman found that his next step was to train tho left hand. This was by no means easy, but after patience and practice a consider able degree of proficiency was attained, and he added CU per cent, to his formei capacity. Ho believes a still furthei advance is practicable, but is confluent that any compositor by tho uso of his inventions will bo able to add at least CO per cent, to his speed. Pittsburg Dis patch. A Monster Volcano. Hawaii is chiefly famous for its vol canoes. Kilauoa, tho largest activo vol cano in tho world, lies on tho sido of the mountain Mauna Loa at an elovation of 4,000 feet. Wo usually think of a vol cano as a cone, but Kilauoa is rather a great sunken pit in tho midst of a vast desolate plain, which slopes up gently to the summit of tho mountain. It is a pit of no less than nino miles iu circumfer ence and tho area of its lowest lovol is six square miles. Tho level varies, but it is at present GOO feet below tho sur rounding country, and i reached by a fcteep descent down tho s.ieer face of a precipico which extends right around tho crater and, as it were, walls it in. Within the crater, toward its southern end, is an inner crater with ono or moro lakes of fire, called Halemaumau, or Houso of Everlasting Burnings, which constitute tho true chimney of the vol cano.
