Olllce 95 State street. Goodhuk & Cahill. Budden Death. Henry Rude, a German farmer living on one of the Buunysido fruit tracts, which is 2 miles southwest of Turner, a part of the old J. Q. Wilson farm dropped dead yesterday while at his work, lie had been burning brush, when the fire reached the fences, and greatly excited and exhausted the old man, while at. this work he dropped suddenly dead at the work. Mr, Rude came from the east about ono ye ir ago, he was over 60 years of age, and his sudden death is at tributed to heart trouble, as he was a large, strong man. Ho leaves a young wife to mourn his death. Incukporations. The Grand Rapids Improvement and Develop ment Co. was Incorporated in tho office of the secretary of state jes terday by P. J. Burke,E. E. Cooper, F. E. Habersham, William Loeb aud H. C. Thompson with a capital stock of ?300,000. The principal place of business will be at Astoria The Const Mail Co. was also in corporated. The object is to publish a paper and conduct a job printhm establishment at Marshfield, Coos county. John A. Gray, James Hall and S. R. Davis are the incorpora tors and tho capital stock was fixed at $3000. Hojie Aoain. Geo. F. Smith and lady returned last evening fiom a four mouths' tour of ibo E tut and South. They visited friends in the Mississippi valley, aud went as far east as New York aud south into Florida. Mr. Smith returns con vinced that there are no better op portunities for business anywhere than right here in Salem, aud goes to work with renewed energy. The Kettle Here. The big boiling kettle for the Kuretoti soap factory Is here, aud being put in place. Tho buildings are rapidly as suming proportions, and everything Is being pushed to an early comple tion. Mr. Kureton is evidently a rustler. One Side Finished. Geo. Good hue yestorday completed tho wetting and rolling on tho west side of the south Commercial street improve ment, having it thoroughly sanded. This gives a good surface, and heavy loads can now be taken over tho hill with ease. Discontinued. Lato Thursday afternoon as the engtno and hay press of Ed. S. Ar ney was being taken from Frank Beatty's place to A. F. MoAteo's a serious accident occunvd, Elmer Kightliuger, of Baletn, wa3 octiug as temporary engineer and Frank Boise, tho engineer, wasstaering the lS-'jorse-engine which was drawing the haypress. When they got to the first bridge east of the Iudiau school, on tho Gilbert road, the en gine only reached tho becoud bent when the big drive wheels went through and down about 12 fret, carrying tho two men down aud under the furnace. The big steel baling press only missed by a few inches, going down on top of the helpless men. The rest of the crew, iucludlug two brothers of. the engin eer, were near by, and rushed at once to his assistance. Luckily in fulling, the steam pipes broke near the front end of the boiler aud on the lower side aud most of tho steam escaped without scalding tho two men. Mr. Kighllinger was able to move about, but the tool box and steering wheel had to be knocked to pieces befure Boise could bo gotten out. By this tiuie help had arrived from the government school, and tho Injured were kindly caied for by the post surgeon, and taken to the hospital attached to the school. Tho loss to Mr. Aruey in dam aged engine will be about $250. The bridge is a total wreck. Synieofthe stringers were almost rotted ofl and a new bridge is immediately neces sary. Tho bridge has been unsife for some time for teams, as seyerul plunks were broken and rotten. When it is replaced it should be at I, I least four feet higher to bring it up nearer the proper grade of the road aud made with stouter lloor posts. Mr. Boise will probably recover, but will bo a cripple for many months at the best. Mr. Kightliuger was biough to Salem by W. N. Cham bers, and is resting comfortably at his home in South Salem. A New Salem ite. Thursday morniug last, XV. H. Riddell and family left here for their future home in Salem, lOregon. Jt is with keen regret that wo part with them. For fourteen years Mr. Riddell has been an honored and respected citlen of this place, aud has always been in the front rank of those who nave la bored to build up the town. Ho has been engaged in extensive business interests here, being at ono time in the agricultural imploment and liv ery business, and later was resident partner and manager of thoTuthill Lumber company at this point. For two years Mr. Riddell was united with A. L. Whaloy in the general merchandise business. Recently ho has given his time to pushing real estate deals and writing insurance. Mr.Riddell was for one term a mem ber of the territorial legislature, and filled tho position with ability. He has also held many responsible posi tions in city and township alialrs. In fact, Mr. Riddell has been recog nized by all his friends and acqualu tauccs us a genuine rustler, an hon est man aud a good citizen, and we are loth to part with him aud his family. But, since it must be, this community heartily joins in wishing them all the happiness and nil pros perity possible in their now homo. Valley Springs (Dak) Vldette. A Very New Boy. Thero ar rived at the Stato Reform school this morning a now boy, committed from "Nowhere" by the "Great High Court." Ho comes with the name of Miles, and will be given a Christian name as soon us one worthy of him can bo found. He will no doubt be tho pet of the In stitution, and superintendent and Mrs. Miles are to be congratulated upon the arrival of this permauent inmate of their houbehold. A new crow was put on north of the bridge at noon, which will work north ward. More men will bo added from day to day. In a Cooij Retreat. Yesterday a pleasant picnic was held at Crys tal Springs, wlfcre participants en joyed a refreshing refreshment away fiout the sun's rays. Tho as- sault upon contraband whisky that has been in progress in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during tho lost fow da.vs has come to a successful con clusion, and her magesty's forces, two olllcers, 09 men, and one guu have returned from their expedition with Brouchard, tho smuggler, un der arrest. This contraband trade has been allowed by all governments for years and years to proceed un molested. Everybody knew that the Impoitalion of whisky by way of tho French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelou was regularly con ducted. The "free-traders," as the smugglers are designated, were backed by men of capital and poss ibly of repute at tho provincial headquarters. It was their task to sail to tho French group, oil" the coast of Newfoundland, aud there take on board the dregs from the Boston distilleries. This deadly stufl they carried down tho gulf, distributing it among tho poor fishing villages on either shore. Such portions as were not salable below Quebec were leserved for Quebec itself, but special opportuni ties for its carriage into town had to be secured. While awaiting a chance to land it the liquor was usually concealed at a quiet resort on the Islo Aus Coudres. La Mln erve says: "The whole population nearly is in sympathy with the smugglers, and in most cases are prepared to defend them with arms aud their hands. Stories are told to glorify the bold outlaws. Tu the vilhgos their exploits are recounted, and it is regaided as an honor to a parish to possess any of these uu scupulous free-traders," Thousands Wore Killed. Amsterdam, July 20. Hnudels bad publishes letters from Celebes, giving details of the recent eruption on Great Hangir island. The erup tion commenced at 0 p. m., uuher aided by the slighest seismic warn ing. Immense volumes of ilame and smoke, and masses of stoned suddenly burst from tho volcano. The stones fell all over tho island, killing hundreds of natives, who were busy in the fields. Those who succeeded in reaching the supposed shelter of their homes fouud no refuge, many houses having been crushed beneath the weight of the falling stones and the roofs having collapsed under the weight of ashes, burying the inmates, Streams of laya flowed with frightful rapidity down tho slopes of the mountains. It is estimated thafc over 1000 per ished in the slopes of the mount ains, and many hundreds moro in the lowlands, but the exact loss of life is not yet known. Tne island is now threatened with a famine, all the crops having been destroyed. In many parts of tho island the wells had become dry. Tho Dutch authorities are doing tho best they can to alleviate the distress. An Editor in .'ail. Caiison, Ney., July 20. Yester day afternoon tho grand jury of Ormsby county were called tp in vestigate the charge of mulfeasanso iu office made by the Appeal against the county officials. Sam Davis, editor of tho Appeal, was called up on to stato tho source of his informa tion, but he declined, on tho ground that it was unwritten law of the profession that confidential com munications to editors wero held Inviolate, whereupon ho was ordered to Jill till he should decide to reveal his authority. Davis Is now out of jail, L. Stovcn bou, the party who gave him the information, having come forward and released him from tho obliga tion of faecrecy. Stevenson, who was brought beforo the grand Jury and asked to testify, declined to testify on tho ground that it would incriminate him. The Rioters' Case. Boise, Idaho., July 20. Duwe, proprietor of tho Copper Chiof sa loon, was shot and killed while standing behind ids bar this after noon by William Murphy, ex-flro marshal, becauso he would 'not mix Murphy a '-cocktail." Murphy was a dissolute person, and had been a friend of Dawe aud had free drinks whenever ho wanted them at the latter's place. Dawe refused to mix lancy drinks for him, and today when Murphy called for a "cocktail" and got whisky straight, he shot Dawe dead. Dawe was an ex-prio fighter, but was not quarrelsome.
