CiURB Holes Mado by UghtnlnK. Tboro is an old Hibernicism about making a holo and trying to crawl in and draw it in aftor you. A bolo is a hard thing to put into a collec tion of minerals, but there are a fow holes in cortain cabinets that aro among tho most prized of their con tents. It must bo added, howover. that they have enough surrounding material to prove that they am holos. They aro called fulgurites, nnd thoy aro mado by liRhtninfr. A thunderbolt striking into a sand heap or sandy soil is somotimes hot enough to vitrify, or turn into glass, tho silicious matter that it pene trates, 30 that you havo a glass tube just as big around as a lightning Oash. Tho largest of thoso tubes known is about throo feet in diameter, but commonly they aro less than an inch in thickness. Thoy havo boon known to ponotrato sand for a distance of thirty feet. Though lightning occa sionally ponotrates rock it never goes into it for moro than an inch or two, and moro often vitrifies its surface without striking in. A good many fulgurites havo been found in Mexi co, but the largest and most remark ablo are found on tho mountain called Littlo Ararat, in Armenia, for which tho lightning seems to have a particular affection. Minerals. Wear Proper Eyeslaaios. The philosophy of wearing classes to improve our vision is that the eyo is an optical instrument which, when perfect, is adapted for seeing both far and near objects without any con scious effort. But tho number of perfect eyes is small compared with those that aro imperfect Most eyes aro either too long or too short, so that tho rays of light aro not focused distinctly upon tho retina without an effort of tho muscles of accommodation to do so, and that effort causes strain. An eye that is too Bliort is called hypermetropic, or farsighted. Ono that is too long is called myopic, or nearsighted. It is by tho means of glasses that these defects aro collect ed and objects broucht to a focus upon tho retina without tho strain which othorwiso takes place. Peoplo frequently havo no con- cious defect in vision. Thoy seo all light. Still thoy havo burning of tho eyes, and sometimes sties or inflamed lids, caused by tho uncon scious effort to accommodate their vision for near or far objects. Many headaches aro also caused by defective vision. Thoso cases can all bo cured by woaring tho proper glasses. M. L. Lines in Jenness Mil ler Illustrated.
