nears. had sued tlint city for $15,000 dam
ages for a broken leg and other injuries
roatained, it la claimed, by a fall npou
tho sidewalk thero sorao time ago. If
Bnrkhart h not an assumed namo the
man is not known here. There aro sev
eral features about tho case, however,
that recall tho career in this section of
ono of the shrewdest confidence men
who ever worked a gamo in Illbob.
Tho man's name was Landers. He
was an expert telegraph operator and
ono of tho smoothest of talkers. Land
era mado it a rogular business for sov
oral years of traveling through tho state,
falling down on bad sidewalks In coun
try towns, and breaking his leg. It was
always the same leg that was broken.
A heavy damago suit followed each
accident, and tho man fairly coined
money at his peculiar business. His
success in towns and small c'.tics tired
his umbitiou for greater thiugn. Ac
cordingly, fifteen years ormoioago, he
wont to 8t. Louis, found a bad place in
tho pavement on Oliver street, and
promptly fell down and broko his leg
thero.
Ho afterward compromised tho mat
ter with tho city for 2,000 and actually
secured every dollar of it. After that
Landers camo hero and pencd up one
of tho largest retail grocery stores in tho
stato of Illinois. Tho placo was run
upon metropolitan principles, and made
a flno showing for a country st iro. The
trado of tho town, however, did not
justify tho outlay, and the country
grocer soon went to tho wall. Aftor
tho failure of tho business he left it to
straighten out itself, and returned to tho
rnoro profitable business of leg breaking.
As a pretender Landers hud no su
perior, and few if any equals. Some of
the best physicians wore taken in by the
follow. Ho submitted to paiuful opera
tions with wonderful fortitude. A num
ber of physicians, whoso honesty has
never for a momont been questioned,
havo gone upon tho witness stand in
court and taken a solemn oath that the
man's log had been broken and reset by
them, when in roallty tho fellow had
never been hurt at all.
Tho man's ability as a pretender in
that linowaa equaled only by his ability
to toll with wonderful oiled a tale of
woo. His pitiful story was told in such
a manner that it carried conviction with
it. It seldom or never failed to bring
about tho desired verdict. Landers
finally drifted to Chicago, whero ho waa
caught in somo swindle) and was sent to
tho Joliet ponitontiary for a term of
years. Tho torm expired sovoral years
ago and tho leg breaker left for the

New York and Now Jersey railroad bo

afternoon. As a passenger train was
proceeding at full speed, a sixteen-year-old
girl loft hor half dozen companions
in tho roadway that runs near tho track
and stopped quickly in front of tho lo
comotive, which was not moro than 000
feot away.
Sho was laughing defiantly, facing tho
locomotivo, standing squurely between
tho rails, and tho engineer knew that
sho waa bent upon mischief and not
upon suicide. He mado tho passengers

big fish had got entangled in them,
so that ho was easily pulled to tho

in business in Provincetown, I was

ing his liver. By tho way, all tho oil
of a shrk is in his liver, whilo that
of a whale, of course, is in his flesh,
or blubber. I took a nilo and meas
ured this shark and found his length
to bo justthirty-ono feet, the breadth
of his tail was seven feet, and his cir
cuuiferonco in tho thickest part bbc

Tho liver of this shark weighed two
tons, and this is how it was deter
mined: Tho liver was cut in pieces
and pitched into a dory; tho dory
carried a ton and a half in weight bo
sides tho rower, as has boon proved,
bringing hev down to hor upper
streak; tho dory was twico loaded
deep with this liver, and so tho fish
ermon thought tho weight was near
ly three tons, but to bo within
bounds 1 concluded to call it two
tons, and so it is recorded in this
voracious chronicle. After the oil
had been tried out I found that it
mado seven barrels full, and was
