Tho nows that a circus was coining to tho littlo town of Y reached that out of tho wayplaco ovonboforo tho rtdvanco rtgent with his glittering posters nnd created a genuino sensa tion. . Tho wholo countrysido was etirrcd up ovor it, moro or less, hut probably tho excitement reached its highest pitch in tho minds of Tom and Jerry, twin brothers, aged tliir teen, tho lenders of most of tho boy ish mischiof thnt mndo tho school of Y n torror to teachers far nnd wide. Theso two had never seen a circus, though thoyworo familiar with them from hearsay and dimo novels, nnd tho idea that a real livo ono was com ing to their town sot them wild. They at onco laid plans to procuro tho prico of admission, fifty cents each, a Rmnll fortuno to them. Their father was dead and their mothor could not afford, thoy well know, to spond a dollar on thorn. Thoy nt onco organized an amateur circus nmong their companions, and after a good deal of rehearsal on a parallel bar and n trapeze gavo n public per formance, charging ono cent for ad mission. Tliis notted only fifteen cents, and Jerry got a sprained anklo, while Tom buret his only pair of trousers whero it did the most harm. By that timo tho advance- agont arrived and proceeded to covor the town with posters that took the boys' breath away. For carrying on immense pail of pasto all day thoy got ton cents each from tho agont, and thoy had considorablo difficulty in ungluing their clothes that night sufficiently to got thom off. But tho postors wero an unalloyed delight, and Tom and Jerry played hookey in order to stare at thpm till the teacher enmo himself from tho school nnd dragged them away. On these wonderful posters all tho wild ani mals of tho univorso wore engaged in a bloody battlo to tho death. A hip popotamus ripped up an elephant which with his trunk was strangling a tiger, which was chowing a lion which was in turn clawing a tender gazollo that had rushed foolishly in to this torriblo struggle. This scono fascinated Tom and Jerry and thoy fully expected to soo it enacted at tho circus. It divided the attention that otherwise would havo been dovoted exclusively to tho pic tures of acrobatic young women in pink tights, who leaped through flaming hoops held at least twenty feet above their barebacked horses and tho fat girl, who was said to weigh 1,000 pounds. In tho course of timo tho circus ar rived, and Tom and Jerry procured tho job of carrying water for tho ani mals to drink from a distant creok, up a steep hill in heavy buckets, un der tho broiling sun, .and for this thoy got twonty-fivo cents each, With blistered hands and aching backs tho boys perched thomsolves proudly on tho hai'd, narrow soats and waited for tho glories to unfold, Tho circus might havo onco beon a fair sido show, but it had lost its chief attractions, ono by ono, along tho road, through sheriffs' attach ments and othor unkind people, and what was loft was a sorry lot uideou As tho sh'ow proceeded, Tom and Jerry's faces foil nnd grow longer and longor. Finally Tom nudged Jorry violently. "What's tho matter with yorJ" asked Jorry angrily, for his licnrt was soro with disappointment. "Lot's go out and look at tho pos tors," roplicd Tom sadly. . And thoy wont. Now York Trib uno. Eiprcsslvo Blanc. Official Blang and political slang havo a tendency to uso tho fewest number of words to oxpross an idea and tho fowest numbor of syllables to inako tho word. Thoro is tho uso of tho word "mado" instead of pro moled, "broko" instead of dismissed from tho servico, "got at" to moan that somo ono has been successfully induced to do something, "pull" to signify innuonco, favoritism and oill dal friendship; "pulled" to sum up what happens when a squad of po licemen malzo a numbor of prisonora nt onco from tho samo plnco, "fell down" to show that thoro has been a final fuiluro in what was under taken, "dono up" in tho senso of tho demolition and crushing of somo ono. Theso aro a fow samples. A littlo thought will enable any ono to add n numbor of others. Thoy show tho tendency of ono class of popular slang to brovity and Bonten tiousness. -Now York Sun. "Each Spoonful has done Its Perfect WorkJ' Is the verdict af every woman who has used Royal Baking Powder. Other baking powders soon deteriorate and lose their strength, owing to the use of inferior ingredients, out Royal Baking' Powder is so carefully and accurately com-r pounded from the purest materials that it retains ita strength for any length of lime, and the lastJ spoonful in the can is as good as the first, which, is not true of any other baking powder. FRAUDS THROUGH THE MAILS. Somo of tho Many Schemes That Aro Constantly Ilolng Worked. Tho frauds attempted by tho uso of tho mails aro almost inmunorablo. Thoy consist of Bchomes concocted to humbug tho unsuspecting public, and it seems tho greater tho fraud tho greater tho roturns to tho swin dlor. Nearly all of theso schemes mako uso of advertisements pub lished in newspapers and of circu lars distributed through tho mails. Without theso means thopublio could not bo reachod, and for this roason tho law has been enacted prohibiting tho uso of tho mails for fraudulent purposes. But it is to bo borno in mind that unless complaints aro mado to tho postofiico department theso frauds aro carried on without any knowledge of their oxistenco and no investigation can bo had. To givo a fow instances of theso frauds. A fow years ago an adver tisement appeared in tho papers Btat ing that for tho sum of ono dollar a rccipo would bo given for tho per manent euro of stammering. Whon tho dollar was sent tho receipt was returned, which simply road, "Keep your mouth shut." Anothor in stanco of litis land was whoro an ad vertisement recited that for fifty cents a receipt would bo given for catching all tho fish in any given body of water. When tho fifty cents was Bont a recoipt would bo returned tolling tho victim "to dip all tho wa ter out and then pick up tho fish." Anothor form of fraud is perpe trated by means of advertisements bo worded as to mislead tho public. Persons answering thom think that for twonty-fivo cents thoy aro to havo a watch or somo other valuablo article whon, in fact, thoy moroly gotBomo illustrated catalogue. An extonsivo fraud has booh carriod on by cortain persons claiming to bo commission merchants or produco dealers who send out thoir circulars and prico lists offoring prices higher than tho market, when, in fact, thoy havo no commission house, and prob ably only dosk room in shop or sa-, loon, and tho goods shipped to thom aro rocoived and sold at any prico obtainable, no return whatovor being mado. Somo timo einco appeared a very glowing advertisement of a book ex clusively for young, unmarried peo plo both gentlemen and ladies tho prico of which was fivo dollars. For tho livo dollars n very cheap edition of tho Biblo was sent. A fino tirno keopor, with the cut of a watch, would bo advertised for $1. Tho sondor would expect a watch in ro turn, but ho would got a sun dial. Great frauds havo beon carriod on by tho proposed publication of hand somely illustrated books, for which photographs of prominent mon woro Bolicitod. t was added that to havo" tho necessary copper plates on graved would cost $10,75, A sur prisingly largo number responded with photographs and monoy, but nr books, of courso, woro published. Washington Star. A Free Munla Lon, Tho great baritpno, Lassallo, with a congenial company of follow artists, among whom wero Dunbar Prico, Mrs. Blackstono and ono of the Do Itoszkes, was ono noonday in tho summer timo talcing breakfast on tho veranda of tho Resorvoir hotel at Versailles, whon two sad eyed itin erant Italian musicians camo along and began to play tho harp and Bing ono of Valontine'a songs from "Faust." A sigh of dismay broko from tho assembled company, but Lassallo, who was in good humor with his breakfast and with tho world, Bald, "Tones!, I'll fix thom I" Pushing away his coffeo ho arose, and tender ing tho Hingor a pioco of Bilver, said: "My friend, I'll show you how that Bhould bo sung. You do not phraso that Bong proporly." Then ho burst forth with his grand voico and Bang tho Bong through, to tho great do- light of all within range, Tho poor traveling musician turned green and began to tromblo with awe, aud finally, whon tho end camo, touched his hat and murmured hum bly, "Morci, mon maitro, I will not Bing again whon you may hoar."
