' Thaio was a road leading out of the city as nearly as possible in that direction, which, if you followed far enough for covonty railes, in fact you would como to a snudl town where my couain Christoiih- r lived, beforo hia health hroko down and his futhcr lost all his lnonry in Bpcc ulation. Cliris had always bten doli cate, Irat no ono thought very sori ously of it, till ho had this fotxf ul ill ness when hislifo wasdotpuirodof; and though ho recovered move or km, as consumptive pcoplo Bomo times do, ho only got hotter to find that lna father was a banlviT.pt, and that ho himself must work whUo ho could, rather than bo a burden ou his family. So, hearing of a young fellow in Mcrton our great manufacturing city who wanted a privuta tutor, Chris camo to coach him and to board with us; for wo were a large family, and mothor said wo could do it as cheaply for him as ho would bo li&cly to do it anywhoro olso, and put by something into tho bargain. Not that wo should havo wanted to gain by having Cliris, if wo had had money enough of our own ; but thon wo nover had. There wcro so many of us, and father only earned 130 a year; and mothor was an invalid, and tho lodgcro woro continually coming to grief in somo way that compelled thorn to leavo without Bottling thoir accounts. And tho younger ones woro Btill at Bchool, and Bob only earned ton shillings a wook, and Arthur had a scholarship at Oxford that was nover enough to keop him, and Milly, our showcard, as wo called hor, would not tako a situation, or do anything whatovor but got on gagod to ono young man after an othor, each worso than tho last. Sho really monopolized tho draw ing room with having thorn to after noon tea which wo could not afford. But it did not matter about tho draw ing room, for that was horriblo, with an old grand piano whoso lid was looso, and with walls that crumbled and lot tho nails out, bo that tho brackets tumbled down on people's uoaua but mothor avoiuu havo thorn put up again. And thoro was always a dreadful atmosphoro of hearthrugs and old antimacassars. Thon Harriot, our ono sorvant, had no time to dust, and I could only dust tho drawing room proporly onco a weok; thoro woro so many othor things to do, and tho soot wni bo trying. Thoro could bo no placo on tho oarth grimier than Morton. Wo hud tho chimneys Bwopt as often ns wo could afford it, but it seemed to mo that othor pooplo novor Hwopl theirs at all, nnd as Boon as tho windows woro oponod tho Boot camo in, darkening tho air liko tho plnguo of locusts and Bottling down over everything that was just scrubbed clwin till ono folt as if ono could Mo down and die. Tho fogs woi-o full of it you nover saw such substantial fogs. Chris said once that thoy woro meat and drink to him j and thoy happened ovory othor day. And what with soot and fogs and niothor'a neuralgia and Willy's engi foments ami a fi.mily of nine lifo vns not Mfo; but it was Btill less oxistonco. It was ono long scramble. I folt sorry beforehand for Chris, kuowing how different things had boon for him a year ago, when ho did not know that ho would novor bo Btrong again, or that his father had eiwcitf atod away everything, I know ho was not uccuBtoniod ton houso liko ours", and I know that if I did not look after him a little nobody would. It Boomed likely tlmt Milly would not oven flirt with him, bo causoho was consumptive; at least, Bho hnd asked already whether it was catching, and Bald that it would bo funereal to havo him in tho houso. So I made his room as nico as 1 could it was tho attio next mine. It had not leon ropapoml for veal's, bocauso wo said tho walls woro dump, Thoy woro not really, but wo hud no money. Still, it looked elum when 1 lmd douo I romomlw Btanding btill and watching ugivaf tlako of soot that was hovering In throu,'1, tho window in tin uudcoided way- nnd I oyon got mum nasturtiums out of tho back garden and put thorn in a vuso. They wow ding-, liko everything olso, but they looked grcon and yel low, and better than nothing, I rouiouibor 1 had only juat dono ' when Chris camo aud waa shown Into the drawing room. Mother und Milly were there; mothor had neu ralgia and MiUy had a cold; Und though it was a warin day tho fire waa lit and thoy woro sitting over it and would not havo tho window open. Whon I camo down I found them all there, and mother waa teU ing Chris about hor neuralgia. Ho looked flushed just then, not like a person who could not Mvo long, to mo. and so bright and resolute I liked his face vory much; but I Baw that the drawing room was giving him a dreadful headache and no wondor. So I ran down stairs and mado tho tea. Chris and I wcro friends diroctly. I don't know how it was, for I very seldom mako friends, and all tho young men who como to tho houso go straight to MiMy liko iron filings to a magnot. But it was dnteront with Clins, because tho drawing room mado his head ache, just as it did mino; and when wo know each other bettor wo found, that wo liked tho samo things and people though ho know far moro than I did, nnd novor grow bitter against anyone, like mo. Ho had such a fearlecs, friendly way with tho verld; and yet there were only a very fow pco plo ho altogether trusted and reMed on ; and I was ono of them. I know ho trusted mo completely, er ho would novor have told mo about Paulino. Partly, indeed, I guessed it. For wo fell into a way of going walks to gether on Sunday afternoons, when Cliris had some sparo time and I mado it, and I found out that ho liked this particular road tho road running west northwest. It was such a Btupid road. First it led through a long streot of tho3o miserablo, thin, gray houses that look liko grave stones standing upright, and then camo streets full of public houses and wretched Uttlo sweet Bhcp3 with halfpenny ices and tobacconists' and "boots mendod while you wait." Thon thoro was a dismal triangular bit of common, with a fence on ono sido all over placards, and thon a red brick Primitive chapel and moro re spectablo houses tiM at last camo real fields. You could not caU it country where there were always cabbage leavos and bits of broken pots and clothes hung out to dry. But generally at this stngo we turned back. I soon concluded that it was tho way to Chris' old home, but I guessed moro than that. For people do not always like to walk in the direction of a particular placo only becauso thoy havo lived most of their life thoro. There must bo something or somo ono thero now that thoy liko to fancy thomselvea noaror; and by and bye, when Cliris saw that I guessed, he told mo tho whole. Thoro was very littlo of it, as ho said cheerily. It was just as I thought. Tho girl ho loved had lived there, was Mv iug thoro still, nnd 4ior name was Paulino. Sho was rich, ho said, and vory beautiful. Ho told mo what sho was liko, and I could not help knowing that I should havo loved hor, that any ono must havo dono. And Cliris had lost everything at onco money and health aud hope. "It wouldn't havo mattered about tho monoy," said Chris in his quaint way. "I would have asked hor to wait for mo and worked my way up. It would havo been a vory good thing. But you can't ask a girl to wait for you when you find you have only ono lung." Ho laughed rather ruefully, aud I laughed, too, though something caught my breath. "Did tho doctor givono hope?" I asked. "If I had gono abroad at onco," said Cliris, "bur I couldn't do that. So I thought, ns thoro might bo n year or two, I might as woll do some thing for my living. And this turned up." 'Did sho, " I said tentatively, ' 'know you liked her?" ChriB Hushed n littlo and looked away, but not boforo I had seen a sudden light in his eyes. "I nover told her," ho answored simply. "Thoy Bay womon know." "And she did you was bho I mean, woro you" His flush dooponod. "It was too early in tho day," ho said. "I sometimes thought if it had gono on but it didn't go on. I have prayod about it. Not vory en thusiastically, perhaps but it is a good prayer. And thoro's another follow in tho running a remarkably good follow. I think it will bo all right." I did not answer. It scorned all wrong to mo. Ho had told m tho story on ono of our Saturday aftor noon wnllrs, and whon it was ouded wo Btill walked ou west northwest. It seemed as if wo woro walking on aud on to a placo where, our roads would divido forever, and thon I know what a blauk thero would bo for ono of us. I could not pray his prayor. I would havo liked to alter every tiling. Yot I hardly dared wish that Paulino lovod him I understood him so woM. I think that, though ho lovod hor a thousaud times bettor, she could hardly havo understood him much hotter than I. But anyone caUed Paulino it must bo good enough only to worship and strew rosea for, liko tho man lu Browning. Well, I would havo gathered her buaheh) of rosea, but I thought she might write to Chris. Sho nover wrote of course he had not written sasssisasiaasMsssaasssMiMSsaassaMs Civ KAN! StiU, ho Went on working, and kept up won derfully throujh tho summer, though wit.i autumn his cough grow terribly bad, aud t .e winter, that ovory ono bald wou.l bo so trying, was very near. But on Saturdays we stiU had our walks, and still went tho old way UU west northwest grow to bo a watchword between us for all that Wo wanted and could not get. Wo , teldom said it without a laugh ; but ' thero is no ono but mo who knows tho meaning of it now. It waa ono Saturday in October that Chris came in with a lotter in his hand. I know beforo ho told what tho nows was, from something in his face. Paidino was to bo mar-1 ried in November to tho other fel low. "My prayer has rcaUy been an swered," ho said, a Mttlo restlessly, "in b!x months. And now I want to buy a wedding present that is aM that remains to bo dono. You'll como with mo, won't you, Janet?" I nodded, and wo went. Chri3 was vory bright and eager aoout buying that wedding present rather too bright, perhaps, when ono Baw tho restless look in his eyes. Wo went from placo to placo, and at last found an exquisite littlo flower vaso that took his fancy, though it cost far moro 11. an ho ought to havo af forded. I fancied he inusfcof ten havo taken her flowers. "I shall not send my name," Chris docided, when hi3 gift was packed up and oven addressed. "But I think sho will know." I know sho would know. "Now let us take tho road," said Chris, laughing, whon his parcel was sent off and I know which road ho meant. I could walk it in tho dark. I think if I had only ono inch of strength left I would chooso to Avalk thero till I died. Wo took an emni: bus nnd wont rather farther out than usual. Cliris was very bright and brotherly rather in on absent way, and seemed bent on showing mo that ho was not downhearted. But wo talked of other things, nover of Paul ino. Wo had tea at a Uttlo shop "really in the couulry," as Chris Btiid hope fully. I think thoy took us for brother and sister. It was a very pleasant shopwomau ; she had a lit tlo girl with a round, ruddy faco and very light hair, who mado friends with Chris at once, as children al ways did, and ho gave hor a bright now sixpence, for which I shook my head at him. Wo had tea at a small round table by tho front kitchen firo rather than in tho cold, deserted room whero thoy had visitors in tho summer. It was bo warm and com fortable, and Chris liked tho warmth, though ho could eat Mttlo. When tea was done we still sat thoro fivoimin utos by tho firo, chatting quietly. Perhaps it was becauso a crisis was over and ono could breath moro free ly; perhaps it was becauso ho know the vaso would pleaso her; but I think thoso fow minute3 wore pleas ant oven to Chris. Somotimes his faco comes up beforo mo as clearly as possiblo, with the firelight on it though I cannot recall it whon I try. Thon we set out to walk back. AU tho way thoro tho wind had been with us, and wo hardly folt it, but now wo met it full. If was a bitter wind, and beforo wo had loft tho shop ten minutes a driving sleet be gan. Wo walked two miles beforo wo could get an omnibus. Chris thought lightly of it, of course, nnd was only anxious for mo as if I could havo been hurt I Death is for peoplo liko Cliris. I try to forgot that walk home, and go baclc to whero wo satin tho firolight; but I dream of tho othor sometimes, aud the sleet is in our faces again nnd I know it is kiUing him, and wako myself with calling out. Vory well; that is nil over. Tho doctor said that perhaps it mado no ronl difference; what hap pened thon might havo happened any day in tho stato Chris was in. It was an hour after we reached homo, nnd ho was coughing terribly ho broko n blood vessel. But ho lived for jtwo days, and I nursed him to tho oud ; ho wanted no one else. Ho said I wa3 a good nurso, but I know my hands woro very hard and rcugh with houbowork. I did pray that I might loso tho usoof them for ever if God would only mako them cool and soft till Chris died; but I supposo that would havo beon a miracle Cliris did not mind. Ho was very grateful, and said he should certainly meet mo again. Ho had always so much faith. A littlo bo foro ho died ho smiled and said ho was going west northwest. That is throo years ago and I am gbul now; for tho summers seem to bo growing shorter and shorter and thowintors longer; thero is a great deal of distress everywhere, nnd I am glad ho is away, for whilo ho lived ho would always havo taken tho hardest part But sometimes in tho spring and summer thoro nro vory lovoly days, and thon I wish ho woro back. It is rather liko living in a vacuum, whero ouo can't draw a long breath becauso thero is uo air, but all tlmt will pass over. Milly is married at lust to bohio ono vory rich, but thoro nro all tho others, and tho Boot is worso than evor and now tilings aro always turning up to be dono.
