Speeches were made by President Waite, Secretary Fitzgerald, Senator Hirsch and others. A finance committee com posed of the president, secretary and Recorder Goodell wua appointed to audit all bills, order same paid and raise funds enough by volun tary contribution to settle balanco of bills out. The club wound up its affairs iu good shape. DisausTED. Friday evening was veay quiet around the pool selling stands aud by uiue p. in. all had retired. The sellers, dealers and proprietors of games were disgusted at the absence of life and only at a few saloons could anyone have discovered that there wao racing going en at the state fair grounds. The advertising was let to a false publisher who bled all he could. TheSaleji Way. The best class of sporting men were present. Tho best time ever made on the slate grounds was run this afternoon, and within a second aud a fraction of the best time on record. AFTERNOON RACES. THE CROWD TODAY is the best had so far. The races would have been a greater financial success if better efforts had been made to get out tho people of Salem and of Polk and Marlon counties. The manageis admit that, local advertising was not well atten ded to. Secretary Derby was away Ea-tt until a few days ago, and there was no one to look after the matter. With no other attraction to draw a crowd the success of the races depended upon good local advertising. The managers saw their mistake too late. NOTES. E. W. Wilkin and lady, and Westncott & Irwin have conducted lunch counters iu an acceptable manner. THE SAMPLE BALLOT. Some Points of Interest for Aus tralion Ballot Voters. In addition to the regular nominee there is a blank lino on the official ballot for each office to be filled. If voters cannot bo suited with the regular official nominees they can vote for any one they choose, but must write hh name iu. THE SAMPLE BALLOT. Voters without distinction of parts can procure at The Jour nal office a sample ballot. Which they can study and prepare at home aud bring to the polls with them, and which they are allowed to take into the polling booth with them and use to fix the official while ballot which they receive at the polling place. THE LAW. Following is the law on this peint: Section 67. Any elector who shall use or briug iuto the polling place or carry away therefrom any unofficial ballot or any paper or thing bearing any resemblance to the ofllcial white ballot other than said colored or sample ballot, or anything which will show how he has pre pared the white ballot, or any elector who shall, except as herein other wise provided, allow his white bal lot to be teen by any person with an apparent tutention of letting it be known how he is about to vote, or mutilate his ballot, or place any distinguishing mark upon his ballot, whereby the same may be identified, or who shall mako a false statement as to his inability to mark his ballot, or any person who shall interfere, or attempt to interfere, with any voter when insido said iuclosed spaee, or when marking his ballot, or who shall endeavor to iuduce any voter to mark his ballot in a partic ular way, or before or after voting to show or explain how ho marks or has marked his ballot, upon convic tion Bball be punished by a fine of not less thau $50 nor more than $200. So take your time to prepare your sample ballot, take that with you into the booth, lay it alongside the official ballot and mark that accord ingly. NORTH HOWELL l'RAIKIK. Jones, of tho Baptist church, occupies the pulpit at North Howell on the flrt Sunday of each mouth. Some of our neighbors, who are candidates for legislature, have been attendiog the canvas aud speaking at the diflereut places in behalf of the People's party. The political speaking aud basket dinner at the Newsome camp ground, waa well attended, and a fairly good time was enjoyed by all, considering the cold day and shower of rain that Interrupted things somewhat, about 2 o'clock.
