Ruasell, convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon upon Dr. J. C. Gray, upon the condition that he should leave the state and re main away permanently. Russell has served about two mouths of his sentence. Now Russell refuses to accept the pardon, on condition that he leave the state, and has so notified the ofllclals. His attorney, L. Bilyeu, has given notice of the r appeal of the case to the supreme court. They all love Oregon. A case in Albany was dismissed on the condition that the man leave Albany, hut he didn't leave. Eyery part of the state has its peculiar attraction, says The Democrat. V E a E t A u les. Gardeners and furmers will find it profitable to send and receive free from Prof. Geo. Parties are preparing to send samples of coal to Ban Fran cisco capitalists with a view to en listing them to take hold of the coal fields just east of Salem. The Pacific Land and Orchard Co. is is quite active in spreading the glad tidings of this coal find which has all the appearances of being the greatest mineral discovery ever made in Oregon. Poou Billy Wright. This Sa lem gardner is sick abed with grip, and his creditors have come down on him. A chattel mortgage Thurs day relieved him of all his farm machinery and team and stock, Billy is very much depressed, as he has a great deal more property than enough to pay all his debts, if be was well and bad a chance to turn himself. "I can read your mind," Bald The Journal man to the dashlug men tal Illusionist Carl King at The Willamette. "Cau you ? Lot's see." "You want a house tonight." "You've guessed it." The scribe was presented to the Spanish troubadours from Madrid, Dou Jose Ramirez, his wife and a willowy darkeyed niece, Senoritu Lemaire. The trio speak English, Italian, Dutch, German, Spanish and French and a number of inter vening dialects thrown in. Tbe re porter kuowiug only English, Ger man and Chinook was at a loss to respond but when they touched their mandolins nil diflicuttics dis appeared aud the language of the soul, spoken in beautiful melodies entranced even his savage bre:ist. This trio appear in Custiliau cos tumes and local mandolin aud guitar players will regret it all their lives if they miss this evening of Spaulsh national music at Reed's onera house. Mind Reading Tonight. Carl King, mind reader, and the Spanish Troubadours will be heard for the first time in this city at Reed's opera house toulght, The enter tainment promised by the manage ment is one that is seldom seen here and the high character of the mem bers of the combination may be said to ensure a meritorious enter tainment. Mind Reader King has achieved a national reputation for his wonderful power of thought reading, while Don Jose Ramirez and his troubadours are favorably known on two continents. It has been found that wherever theae artists have appeared they have never failed to score a hit, the remarkable feats of Mr. King ex citing the greatest interest aud as tonishment with all beholders, whiIe the musical features by the trouba dours have elicited the greatest enthusiasm. There will be but two performances by this clever com pany, tomorrow night being their last appearance. . i .- ss - Invention. A Salem man has invented and successfully tested a lightning street crossing sweeper and cleaner. It is on the snow plow principle, mounted on wheels and while a gentle shower softens up the mud, ten steel blades cut the surface of the crossing down clean. One passsng over the crossing fin ishes the work and the inventor, tho' a lame man, cleaned about forty crossings Thursday in a few hours. Good for Balem. The O.
