Then some of the crowd took possession of the door and refused to let anybody out. At the samo time one of themeu turned the gasofl, bats were thrown into the darkness and ladies and chhdrcd screamed with frjght. Borne one turned on the gas again before a pauio occured. Train finally gaified the attention of the crowd and said: "This is the Inst time I will ever speak to an American audience. Hereafter, I am dumb, except to children. I shall not fast, but pask up my things and go to Chicago, where I shall spend the balance of my days. D n the American people, anyhow. They dout ap preciate me. Henceforth I belong to the little ones." It was said ho subsequently tore up bis fasting contract, tickets and everything else relating the Ameri can public. At a late hour the crowd opened the doors and went home. flnOCKINfl INHUMANITY. Burlington, la., Oct. 0. An other case of shocking inhumanity was witnessed Sunday night in the Uniou depot. A German immi grant woman who arrived with her husband and three small children on a midnight train en routo to Noble, la., was taken suddenly sick preliminary to childbirth. Admit tance to St. Francis hospital was re fused, and the attendance of a phy sician was unattainable. One prom inent physician arrived on the Bcene at tho critical moment, but learning thero was no money iu tho job re fused to do anything, and coolly walked away. Three carpenters, named Ceres, Jlrown aud Proctor, at work on tho bridge of tho narrow guugo road, near Tumult's, were killed this moruiug, being run into by a train. THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST LEAOUK. Portland, Oct. 6. Tho regular annual meeting of the PaciflcNonh west Boceball league was held in parlor 321 of the Portland hotel yes terday at 11 o'clock. It was unani mously ordered that the pennant bo delivered to the Portland club, and they be declared the champions for 1891. W. E. Kockwvll, Seattle, ex tresisurer of the league, was elected president;. II. T. Hudson, or Port land, elected vice prtsidout. The election of secretary was deferred until next meeting. The subject ol consolidating tho California and Northwest leagues was not brouglu before the meeting, but Is under stood that a majority of the direct ors of the Northwest league favoi consolidation. The matter has beeii discuBricd here, but no definite pla. of clrcui'. has been decided upon. In case the two leagues are consoli dated it is certain that Spokane will be left out on account of her geo graphical position. Tho circuits have been discussed; one includes Los Atmeles, San Francisco, San Jcwe, Oakland, Sacramento, Port land, Tacoma and Seattle. The other substitutes Salem for Los Angeles. Tho latter proposition ap pears to bo received in a more fav orable light than the former. It Is claimed that the expense iu trans portation to Los Angeles from San Francisco would amount to more than ths excess of receipts at Los Angules over Salem. Bulcin being on the line between Sau Francisco and Portland, no additional expense would bo incurred by playing thero. MRS. PRANK LESLIE MARRIED. New York, Oct. 5. Mrs. Fraak Leslie was married Sunday evening to Mr. William Wilde. The cere mony was strictly privato and was performed by Itev, Charles F. C A series of frightful accidents occur red In a funeral procession at A I too ua, yesterday, in which one man was killed outright, four persons fatally injured, and n score bruised. A procession of forty carriages was following the remains of Nichol Hcmpsireet from the church to the cemetery some distance from town. While the procession was winding downtiill the team at the rear of the others became frightened at a steam thresher aud statted to run. The road was narrow, aud the team ran into and upset a dozen carriage?, breaking six into splinters, and scat tering the occupants. Other teams started to run away, aud a panic ensued; many women jumped out or carriages only to bo trampled on by runaway teams. Edwin Des--trell, or Altoona, was killed, Joseph Perdue, of Grlunell, and Mrs. J O. Mason, aged 70; F. 8. Sayre. aud Mrs. It. C. Lane, of Newton, fatally Injured. Twenty others were moro or less hurt. MISSING CASHIER. Harrishuro, Pa., Oct. C The story that William Llvsey, the miss ing ex-cashier of the state treasury, whoso evidence is wanted by the legislative investigating committee, is In Canada, is geuerally credited here. Mr. Llvsey's father lives iu Canada, and it is thought he weut there when he was discovered In Milwaukee. It is understood that tho state authorities want him bad ly, aud, as a consequence, little sur prise was expressed when it became known that Puttisou and other state officials are arranging to secure hit dxtraditiou. Governor Puttison was asked 011 w hat charge Livsey would bo arrested in Canada in order to secure his extradition, but declined to say anything on the subject, aud tald he preferred not to be quoted. The governor remarked casually that Livsey was wanted, and his manuer betokened that at the proper time there would be brought out evidence strong enough to secure his extradition. A. Schiland, of the committee, appointed to answer Dr. Briggs protest of May tho 11th, arose and read his leport. Dr. Dirch, chniuuuu, of tho prosecuting committee, announced lie was about to sorye Dr. Briggs with a copy of the Indictment and by arrangement with accused the trial was set for Wednesday, November 4th. News comes from the west that Colonel Forsyth, formerly ot General Sherl duii's stall, has just succeeded iu u inning Hie hand of the daughter of Ids old friend, Dr. Dallas Bache, a Plilladelphian also iu the military service, and that Miss Forsyth, the colonel's daughter, has become cn gsged to Dr. Bacbe. Each of the men is 00 years of age, aud each has tK-eii a widower for about the same length or time. Neither or the young' women is much over 20 years or age. It was at one or the military forts near Omaha that the gallant heroes fell victims and sur rendered. Each was accompanied by hN family, aud here it was that each wooed tho other's daughter. None of the arrangements for the weddings have been announced, but the smallest details will be watched for eagerly iu this city. Dr. Dallas Kaclit! He was very active, but charges were made that he had overstenned his authority. He was courtmartialed for it, but was ac quitted. His marriage several years ago was a social event of national interest. Tho late Earl of Portsmouth was a fair representa tive or titled aristocracy, leading a quiet life and of no use to anybody nut himself. Ho was descended from one of the "regicide judges" who, after the restoration of Charlts II, was hauled around the city with a tudter around his neck, and then impri-oued for life. From this an cestor, probably, the earl inherited his wliig principles, and then trans mitted them to li s son, who has sal for about ten yeirs in parliament. Tlie Geranium Saved Her LHe. The father and brother of a dear lit tle woman died of consumption, and slio firmly believed she would soon fol low thetn with the same dread disease. Slio had a friend who believed tlie in valid had inherited her mother's stronger constitution, nnd if she could only bo aroused and the idea banished from hor mind that she would soon die she might be a well woman.
