Abovo Uie3 small chambers aro Iron galleries, one rising abovo tho other until tho roof Is reached. And each one Is load ed down with thousands upon thou sands of volumes. Every available spaco is occupied by dusty tomes, yet in this scorning confu sion thcro is adinirablo order. Tho irmntinn nf nvrrv book is kcnt, and a visitor calling for a certain author Is kept waiting only a few moments. Children under sixteen aro not al lowed In tho library, yet part of It Is devoted solely to children's literature and fairy talcs. Many are tho quaint and curions Lnoks nroserved on these shelves. Ono can sco the Bibles of all nations tho Zend-Avesta and tho Klioran aido by side with tho text book of tho Mormona and tlio Scriptures of tho Christians. Then there aro volumes in tho quaint old English typo, books published threo or four hundred years ago; "Pilgrim's Progress" in Chinese, huge dictionaries, an old Biblo printed in tho Sixteenth century, and tho first newspaper that over appeared. Tlio largest book in existence is in tliis library, a hugo volumo nearly two yards long and containing lifo hizo col ored illustrations of birds of all nations. This book is called "Tlio Audubon Book on Birds." and is worth a fabulous sum. Audubon. remember, is tho man for whom is named tlio society for tho pre vention of cruoly to birds. Its aim Is to do away with tho useless slaughter of birds for millinery purposes. Many are tho cranks that visit tins great library. Some come day after day to search out some pet hobby, and never weary of their useless efforts. Ono old lady is said to haunt tho placo and search volume after volume to dis cover something about herbelf which sho imagines to have been written. She declares her intention of destroying tho pago as soon as found. Another crank is reading all tho Bibles and from dicin compiling ono of ids own.
